An Honest Review After 8 Years and £2,738 in Cashback
Cashback is one of the simplest ways to reduce what you spend online. Instead of paying full price for everything, you earn a small percentage of your money back when you shop, switch services or sign up to certain offers.
One of the UK's biggest cashback websites is TopCashback. It has been operating for years, works with thousands of retailers and is widely considered one of the leading cashback platforms available to UK shoppers.
If you have never used cashback before, you are probably asking the same questions everyone does first: is TopCashback safe, is it actually legit, how long does it take to get paid, is the paid Plus membership worth it, and is it genuinely worth your time?
I joined TopCashback in 2018. Since then, I have earned £2,738.48 in confirmed cashback across 945 successful transactions. I have also had £350.72 declined across 48 transactions, which is something people rarely talk about but is important to understand before you start.
This review answers all of those questions honestly, using real figures from my own account, and explains how TopCashback works, what can go wrong, how to fix common problems and whether it is worth using in 2026.
In a hurry? TopCashback is a legitimate, long-established UK cashback site that is free to join. You don't enter card details with them, and used consistently it genuinely adds up, my account proves it. If you want to sign up, you're welcome to use our TopCashback referral link, which earns us a small bonus and helps keep this blog free.
Is TopCashback Safe and Legit?
Yes. TopCashback is a legitimate UK company and one of the largest cashback platforms available; it has been running since 2005 and works with thousands of well-known retailers.
The most important thing to understand for peace of mind is that you never enter your card details into TopCashback. Your payment information is entered directly on the retailer's website, exactly as it would be if you'd gone there directly. TopCashback simply sits in the middle as a tracking layer.
Like most online platforms, TopCashback tracks certain shopping behaviour to record your transactions and process your cashback. This is not very different from how loyalty programmes such as Tesco Clubcard or Nectar work; they also track what you buy in order to reward you.
I have personally been using TopCashback since 2018 without a single security issue. The figures in this review come straight from my account, including the cashback that was declined, because an honest review shows you the frustrations as well as the wins.
How Does TopCashback Work?
TopCashback is a traditional cashback website. It is not an instant cashback app or a gift card cashback platform, although it does also offer a gift card service (more on that below).
It works by sharing commission with you when you shop online. Retailers pay TopCashback a commission when someone clicks through to their site and makes a purchase, and TopCashback then passes some or all of that commission back to you as cashback.
The process looks like this:
Log in to TopCashback
Search for the retailer you want to use
Click through to that retailer's website
Complete your purchase as normal
If everything tracks correctly, the retailer reports the sale to TopCashback. The cashback appears in your account as pending, and eventually becomes payable once the retailer confirms the transaction.
Most purchases are tracked within a few hours or days, but larger purchases such as broadband or insurance can take several months to become payable because retailers wait for cooling-off periods to pass before confirming.
Is TopCashback Only for Online Purchases?
Mostly, yes, the core of TopCashback is online shopping, where you click through from their site to a retailer before you buy.
However, it isn't only online. There are a couple of ways to earn beyond standard online shopping:
TopGiftCards, TopCashback's own gift card service, lets you buy digital gift cards and earn cashback on them, which you can then spend in store. This is effectively a way to earn cashback on in-person shopping.
In-store offers appear from time to time, where you link a card or activate an offer to earn on physical purchases at participating retailers.
So while online shopping is where most of your cashback will come from, you are not completely limited to it.
How Much Can You Realistically Earn?
Since joining in 2018, I have earned £2,738.48 in confirmed cashback. That money has gone straight back into my bank account, for purchases I was making anyway.
It was not one huge transaction that generated that amount; it was years of consistent use. Some cashback amounts are small. You might earn:
50p on a supermarket order
£3 on a retail purchase
£8 on a household purchase
Individually, these numbers do not look impressive. Over months and years they build into something far more meaningful.
The larger cashback amounts usually come from switching services. For example, I switched from Sky TV and broadband to Virgin Media during a Black Friday promotion. I received three months of free service from Virgin and also had £125 cashback pending through TopCashback. That £125 would not have existed if I had not spent a minute clicking through TopCashback first.
Another example was travel insurance. Using TopCashback's comparison tool, I found a competitively priced policy that offers 20% cashback. An annual policy offered £50 cashback, and after factoring that in, the annual cover actually worked out cheaper than buying a single-trip policy.
Consistency is the real key. Every time you buy something online, ask yourself whether cashback is available; those small amounts add up to a meaningful difference over time.
TopCashback Plus vs Classic: Is the Paid Membership Worth It?
This is one of the most common questions, and the answer is refreshingly simple once you understand how Plus is charged.
There are two membership tiers:
Classic is completely free. It gives you full access to retailers and cashback, with up to a 12.5% payout bonus through the Reward Wallet and a £20 refer-a-friend bonus.
Plus costs £5 per year, and crucially, that £5 is subtracted from your cashback earnings rather than charged to your card upfront. In return, you get up to a 25% payout bonus through the Reward Wallet (double the Classic rate), a £25 refer-a-friend bonus, extra top-ups on cashback, enhanced monthly statements, and access to exclusive Plus-only promotions and competitions.
TopCashback states that Plus members earn an average of 16% more cashback than Classic members.
So is it worth it? Here is the honest maths. Because the £5 comes out of what you earn rather than out of your pocket, the break-even point is simply this: if Plus earns you more than £5 extra over the year, you are better off.
For anyone who uses cashback consistently, even occasional claims of the higher payout bonus or a Plus-only promotion will usually clear that £5 bar comfortably.
My honest take: if you are a casual user who might make one or two cashback claims a year, stick with the free Classic membership; you may not earn enough for the bonus to offset the £5 fee. If you shop online regularly and treat cashback as a habit, Plus tends to pay for itself and then some. You can also start on Classic and upgrade later once you see how much you're actually earning.
(Membership terms and bonus rates are correct as of 2026, but TopCashback does adjust these, so it's always worth checking the current figures on their site before deciding.)
Cashback on Groceries and Everyday Shopping
TopCashback is not just for insurance or broadband switches; you can also earn cashback on everyday purchases.
Online grocery retailers such as Tesco, Sainsbury's, Iceland, Morrisons, and Waitrose all appear regularly on the platform. New customer offers are usually stronger; for example, a first-time Tesco click-and-collect order may offer a £6 cashback bonus, while existing customer rates tend to be smaller and may sometimes be as low as 50p.
Before placing your order, it is worth comparing the cashback available on TopCashback with gift card cashback apps such as JamDoughnut, (which I highly recommend!) or with TopCashback's own TopGiftCards section. Sometimes gift card cashback is stronger; sometimes TopCashback's new-customer bonuses win. This is exactly why it pays to have more than one option, which I'll come back to below.
TopGiftCards and Global Bonus Events
TopCashback also runs its own gift card cashback service called TopGiftCards. This works similarly to instant cashback apps such as JamDoughnut; you buy a digital gift card through TopCashback and receive cashback on that purchase, often within an hour. The rates vary; sometimes dedicated gift card apps offer better returns, sometimes TopGiftCards runs strong promotions.
TopCashback also runs Global Bonus events several times each year, often around bank holidays or major shopping periods. A typical offer might give you a £2 bonus if you spend £10 through TopCashback that day. One common strategy is to buy a £10 supermarket gift card through TopGiftCards to trigger the bonus, then use it on a future purchase.
Combine the £2 bonus with the gift card purchase, and it effectively becomes a 20% saving on the £10 spend.
Free Cashback Offers and Trials
TopCashback also includes a free cashback section. These offers usually involve signing up for free accounts or trial services; for example, signing up for a free Experian account may offer £5 or £9 cashback.
Some offers involve free trials that automatically convert to paid subscriptions. If you try these, always set a reminder to cancel before the trial ends. Free trials can generate easy cashback, but only if you read the conditions carefully.
Why Was My Cashback Declined?
Declined cashback is the single most frustrating part of using any cashback site, and as my own £350.72 of declined transactions shows, it does happen. The most common reasons are:
Using a voucher or discount code that wasn't listed on TopCashback
Returning or cancelling the item afterwards
Not clicking through TopCashback correctly before purchasing (for example, having another tab or ad blocker interfere with tracking)
The retailer simply refusing to pay the commission
You can reduce the odds of a decline by clicking through to the retailer site each time, disabling ad blockers on the retailer site, not using unlisted codes, and completing the purchase in one session. Even then, the occasional decline is part of how cashback works, which is why it's best treated as a bonus on spending you'd do anyway rather than guaranteed income.
Don't Rely on Just One Cashback Site
Here's the most useful habit I can pass on after years of doing this: don't stick to a single cashback platform. Rates vary constantly from retailer to retailer, and the site that's best for your supermarket shop won't be the best for your insurance renewal or your next pair of trainers.
The smart money-saving move is to keep two or three options open and quickly compare them before you buy, so you're always getting the best available rate rather than just the first one you see.
TopCashback is an excellent foundation, but it's worth pairing it with:
Quidco, TopCashback's biggest direct rival, which frequently beats it on specific retailers and runs its own bonus events. Read my full Quidco review to see how it compares or sign up using our Quidco referral link.
Rakuten, strong on certain fashion and big-brand retailers, and well worth checking against the others before a bigger purchase. Read my full Rakuten review for the details, or sign up using our Rakuten referral link.
30 seconds spent comparing rates across two or three sites can genuinely be the difference between £2 and £8 back on the same purchase. Having them all set up means you never leave money on the table.
TopCashback Referral Bonuses Explained
TopCashback offers referral bonuses. Plus members normally receive £25 for each successful referral, Classic members typically receive £20, and the person signing up receives £10. The referred member must earn £10 in cashback before both parties receive their bonuses.
If you choose to sign up, you are very welcome to use our TopCashback referral link. We receive a bonus that helps cover the cost of running this blog and keeping the content free, and you get your £10 head start, too.

Like any cashback platform, TopCashback has both advantages and frustrations. Understanding both helps set realistic expectations before you start.
Pros

Extra promotions such as Global Bonus events
Gift card cashback available through TopGiftCards
Cons

Frequently Asked Questions
Is TopCashback safe? Yes. It's a long-established UK company, and you never enter your card details with them; your payment goes directly to the retailer. I've used it since 2018 with no security issues.
Is TopCashback legit? Yes, it's one of the UK's largest and longest-running cashback sites, paying out real money to millions of members. My own account has paid out £2,738.48 since 2018.
How long does TopCashback take to pay? Retail purchases normally track within a few hours or days and become payable once the retailer validates the transaction, which can take several weeks or months depending on the retailer.
Is TopCashback Plus worth it? Plus costs £5 a year taken from your earnings, and gives roughly 16% more cashback on average plus a higher payout bonus. If you use cashback regularly and earn more than £5 extra over the year, it pays for itself. Casual users are usually better off with the free Classic membership.
Why was my cashback declined? Common reasons include using unlisted voucher codes, returning items, not clicking through correctly, or the retailer refusing to pay commission.
Can I use a gift card and still earn cashback? Sometimes. Some retailers exclude gift card payments. Occasionally transactions still track, but it is not guaranteed.
Is TopCashback really free? Yes. The Classic membership is free. There is also a paid Plus membership at £5 a year (taken from earnings) which increases some cashback rates.
Is cashback actually worth it? Used occasionally it may not feel significant. Used consistently, it adds up; my £2,738.48 came from repetition rather than one big payout.
The Verdict: Is TopCashback Worth Using?
Yes, with one caveat: cashback rewards consistency, not one-off use. TopCashback is safe, legitimate, free to join and genuinely pays out; my own £2,738.48 is proof of what's possible when you make checking for cashback a habit before every online purchase.
It isn't perfect. Transactions occasionally fail to track, some claims get declined, and big payments can take months to clear. But when you understand how the system works and pair it with one or two other cashback sites to always grab the best rate, it becomes a practical, low-effort way to reduce what you spend over time.
If you'd like to start, you're welcome to use our TopCashback referral link; you'll get a £10 head start and help keep this blog free. It's also worth reading my reviews of Quidco and Rakuten and setting those up alongside it, so you're always getting the best deal available.
