Aldi has changed how Too Good To Go bags work over Christmas, letting shoppers reserve discounted food up to five days early.
Aldi is once again making it easier for shoppers to grab discounted Too Good To Go bags over the festive period, with an extended advance booking window in the run-up to Christmas and New Year.
For a limited time, Aldi customers will be able to reserve Too Good To Go bags up to five days in advance, rather than the usual 24-hour window.
The change runs between Thursday, 19th December and Tuesday, 24th December, giving shoppers more flexibility during one of the busiest shopping weeks of the year.
What’s changing this Christmas?
Normally, Too Good To Go bags can only be reserved the day before collection. Over Christmas, Aldi is temporarily extending this.
This means:
• Christmas Eve bags can be reserved from Thursday, 19th December
• Customers can secure bags up to five days ahead
• New Year’s Eve bags will also have an extended booking window
For New Year’s Eve, Aldi is allowing surprise bags to be reserved via the Too Good To Go app from Tuesday, 17th December through to Tuesday, 31st December.
This gives shoppers more time to plan pickups, rather than hoping bags are still available the day before.
How much do Aldi Too Good To Go bags cost?
Aldi’s Too Good To Go bags cost £3.30 each and are advertised as containing around £10 worth of food.
The contents are made up of products that are close to their sell-by or use-by date. You do not choose what goes into the bag, and contents vary by store and by day.
From my own experience, Aldi generally has a decent reputation for the value you get, but there is always an element of chance.
A realistic word of warning
It’s essential to be realistic about what these bags are and what they are not!
They are not guaranteed to contain Christmas food!
They are not designed to provide a complete family meal.
They are not something you should rely on for Christmas Day or Christmas Eve dinner.
You could end up with a mix of bakery items, fruit, salad, chilled food, or ambient products. If you picked up a bag on Christmas Eve and it was mostly salad or bread, that might work for some households but not others.
That uncertainty is part of the deal. If you go in expecting cheap extras rather than a ready-made meal, you are far less likely to be disappointed.
Why is Aldi extending bookings again?
Aldi says the move is designed to give more people access to discounted food while helping cut waste at a busy time of year.
Luke Emery, National Sustainability Director at Aldi UK, said:
“This Christmas, we’re giving greater access to our Too Good To Go bags by letting customers secure them earlier than ever before. It’s a simple way to pick up even lower-priced items at Aldi while cutting food waste.
“We’re proud of this partnership as part of our commitment to becoming a more sustainable business, and seeing how popular it has become with customers and the momentum it’s gaining is incredible.”
Aldi has already sold around 1.5 million surplus food packages through Too Good To Go and expects to sell around 67,000 bags during December alone, driven by higher demand for discounted food.
Too Good To Go’s view
Too Good To Go has also welcomed the extended booking window over the festive period.
Sophie Trueman, Country Director at Too Good To Go UK and Ireland, said:
“We’re delighted to help Aldi and its customers save even more food from going to waste across this seasonal period. Not only does this support Aldi in tackling surplus food, but it also enables customers to enjoy products at great value, while making a positive impact.”
Is it worth trying?
If you already use Too Good To Go, the extended booking window makes things much easier over Christmas and New Year. If you have never tried it before, this is a good low-cost way to test it, as long as you understand the limitations.
Think of these bags as a way to save money on extras and reduce food waste, not as a guaranteed solution for festive meals.
If you go in with the right expectations, it can be a worthwhile way to save on Christmas.
