Why We Keep Coming Back To The Isle Of Wight

Every couple of years, our extended family escapes to the Isle of Wight for half-term. This will be our third trip, with 18 of us gathering in my father-in-law's sister's waterfront home, complete with relatives flying in from Sweden.

It works because we self-cater, share costs, and make the most of free attractions. No hotel bills. No restaurant stress. Just proper family time with the tide rolling in outside.

Here's exactly how we do it without overspending.

How We Saved 20% On Isle Of Wight Ferry Crossings

Getting to the Isle of Wight is the most significant single cost of any trip, but there are ways to reduce it. Wightlink is currently running a brilliant midweek discount that can save families a substantial amount on their crossing.

The Route: Lymington to Yarmouth with Wightlink (cars included, as we're driving from different parts of the country)

The Deal: Wightlink's Midweek 20% Off (offer has been extended until the 31st December 202 and is valid on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday crossings.

The Maths (Example: £150 return):

  • Standard return with car: £150

  • With 20% midweek discount: £120

  • After Quidco cashback (4%): £115.20

  • Total saving per car: £34.80

Stack These Savings

  1. Book through a cashback site for extra savings on top of discounts

    • Quidco: 4% cashback (best rate)

    • TopCashback: 3.67% new customers | 1.57% existing customers

  2. Use Tesco Clubcard vouchers, which convert to 3x their value for Wightlink crossings

  3. Book 6-8 weeks ahead for the best base fares

Example: £10 in Clubcard vouchers = £30 toward your ferry crossing

Tip: You can't combine cashback with Clubcard redemption (cashback only tracks when you pay with real money). Choose whichever saves you more based on your voucher balance.

Booking Warning: Half-term and Halloween week slots fill fast. We booked in September to guarantee our preferred times.

Alternative Routes Worth Considering

  • Portsmouth to Fishbourne - Better if you're staying in East Wight

  • Portsmouth to Ryde (Hovertravel) - foot passengers only, but fastest crossing

  • Southampton to East Cowes - Check for their seasonal offers

Dog owners: All ferries allow dogs to travel free.

Budget Strategies That Work

1. Pre-Order Your Groceries

We'll organise a supermarket delivery closer to the trip, choosing whichever has the best deals and lowest delivery charge at the time. Everyone contributes to a shared pot and we cook together. Saves hundreds on restaurant meals and becomes part of the holiday itself.

First-night tradition: Fish and chips from a local takeaway (we all chip in to the pot, no one has to cook, and it sets the perfect, relaxed tone for the week).

2. Maximise Free Entry Passes

English Heritage Family Pass (ends early November 2025) gives free entry to:

  • Carisbrooke Castle (saves £30.80 per family)

  • Osborne House (saves £30+ per family)

  • Yarmouth Castle (saves £15+ per family)

Total saving: up to £75 across the three sites

3. Use Local Discount Sites

The Price is Wight deal site, is a good way to save money on attractions, restaurants, and activities across the island.

Accommodation Hacks

Look for the blue suitcase icon on Visit Isle of Wight listings (properties offering ferry discounts to guests). Make sure you use a cashback service when booking any accommodation, as it can save you money!

Loyalty schemes that work here:

Pack These Essentials

  • Waterproof jackets and umbrellas, but it does get windy, so you might lose it!

  • Layers for changeable weather

  • Reusable water bottles (find free refill locations across the island)

  • Fossil guidebook from the library (free!)

  • Beach towels (many rock pools to explore), as you could get wet!

  • For the same reason, a change of clothes/footwear

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Isle of Wight expensive? The ferry is your biggest cost (around £120-150 for a car + passengers with the midweek discount), but once across, paid attractions range from £28-50 for families, and many of the best things, beaches, fossil hunting, castle ruins, and nature reserve, are free. Self-catering saves hundreds versus eating out.

What's the cheapest way to cross? Book early, travel Tuesday-Thursday whilst the deal is on and use cashback sites (Quidco offers 4%). A £150 return can drop to £115 after the midweek discount and cashback combined.

Should I visit in October? Yes! Autumn offers milder weather, smaller crowds, lower prices, and fossil hunting is better when the beaches aren't packed. Just bring waterproofs.

Can I visit without a car? Absolutely. Foot passenger ferry tickets with Wightlink are much cheaper, and the bus network covers everywhere. Add in bike hire for flexibility. It's actually a nice, slower pace.

How early should I book? For half-term or summer holidays, book ferries 6-8 weeks ahead. Accommodation even earlier if you want coastal properties or family-sized places.

What about food allergies? Most restaurants and cafés are excellent with dietary requirements. Self-catering gives you complete control. Large Tesco in Newport stocks free-from ranges.

Why October Half-Term Works

The island feels different in autumn. The summer crowds are mainly gone. The beaches are yours. The light is beautiful for coastal walks. And the activities that matter most to kids (fossil hunting, castle exploring, steam trains) are just as good (if not better) without the heat and queues.

For our family, it's become the trip we look forward to. Not because we spend a fortune, but because we don't have to.
