Why We Keep Coming Back To The Isle Of Wight

Every couple of years, our extended family escapes to the Isle of Wight during the school holidays. This will be our third trip, with 18 of us gathering in my father-in-law's sister's waterfront home, complete with relatives flying in from Sweden.

It works because we self-cater, share costs, and make the most of free attractions, no hotel bills, no restaurant stress, just proper family time with the sea just metres from our window; it's lush!

Here's exactly how we do it without overspending.

How To Save Money On Wightlink Ferry Crossings

Getting to the Isle of Wight is the highest single cost of any trip, but Wightlink runs several deals worth knowing about before you book. The quickest way to find the cheapest fares for your dates is to use the Wightlink Best Fare Finder, which shows the lowest prices across the calendar so you can choose the most affordable sailing rather than just the most convenient one.

The Route: Lymington to Yarmouth with Wightlink (cars included, as we drive from different parts of the country). Portsmouth to Fishbourne is worth checking too if you're coming from further east.

Book 6 to 8 weeks ahead for the best base fares, and always check the Best Fare Finder first to see if travelling a day earlier or later unlocks a lower price.

Kids Go Free On The Ferry During School Holidays

This is one of Wightlink's best deals, and it is easy to miss. During school holiday periods, up to two children aged 5 to 15 travel free on foot passenger day return tickets when booked with one adult or senior ticket. Under 5s always travel free regardless.

The offer runs across the following periods in 2026, based on Hampshire and Isle of Wight school holidays:

  • Easter holidays: 26th March to 19th April

  • May half term: 23rd May to 7th June

  • Summer holidays: 4th July to 6th September

  • October half term: 17th October to 1st November

  • Christmas holidays: 12th December 2026 to 5th January 2027

The group must travel together, and the offer applies only to foot passengers, so it does not apply to vehicle tickets. It is also separate from Tesco Clubcard redemptions, so you cannot combine the two. Book the Kids Go Free offer directly on the Wightlink website and make sure your travel dates fall within the offer period before you pay.

Discounted Fares Scheme for Low-Income Households

This one does not get talked about nearly enough. Wightlink runs a Discounted Fares Scheme specifically for Isle of Wight residents on low incomes, giving access to fixed, reduced-price travel to the mainland for work, health appointments, or leisure. It covers cars, motorbikes, and foot passengers across all three Wightlink routes.

You are eligible to apply if you are an Isle of Wight resident currently claiming any of the following benefits:

  • Council Tax Support

  • Housing Benefit

  • Universal Credit

You apply directly through the Wightlink website, with a separate form depending on which benefit you receive. If you are on Council Tax Support or Housing Benefit, apply via this link.

If you are on Universal Credit, apply via this link. You will need proof of your benefit entitlement to complete the application.

For families already navigating a tight budget, this scheme can make a genuine difference to the cost of getting on and off the Island. If you qualify, it is worth applying before you book anything else.

Save 20% When Travelling To Isle Of Wight Events

If you are planning your trip around one of the Island's many events, Wightlink offers 20% off crossings for selected events throughout the year. The discount applies to foot passenger, car, and motorcycle tickets, and travel is typically valid from the day before an event starts to the day after it finishes, so you can make a proper weekend of it.

To claim the discount, look for events marked with a green "Ferry offer" banner on the Wightlink events explorer. Not every event carries the discount, so it is worth checking before you plan around a specific date.

Events with ferry discounts running in 2026 include:

  • Jack Up The 60s with The Zoots (11th April) – live music celebrating the defining decade

  • Isle of Wight Spring Walking Festival (9th to 17th May) – guided walks to suit all abilities

  • Walk the Wight (10 May) – a fundraising walk for Mountbatten hospice across varied Island terrain

  • Legend: the Music of Bob Marley Live (16th May) – reggae tribute night at Shanklin Theatre

  • Yarmouth Gaffers Regatta (22nd to 25th May) – the 30th anniversary of this traditional gaff-rigged sailing event

  • Ventnor Fringe Festival (17th to 26th July) – 10 days of music, comedy, cabaret and free street acts

  • Isle of Wight Scooter Rally (21st to 24th August) – one of the biggest events on the UK scooter calendar

  • Wight Buggin' (12th to 13th September) – a family-friendly VW enthusiast weekend

  • Classic Motor Show (12th to 13th September) – around 1,000 vintage and rare cars in a two-day charity event

Note that Tesco Clubcard voucher codes cannot be used as part payment on event-discounted bookings.

Stack Your Ferry Savings

Once you know your dates and which deal applies, here is how to layer up the savings:

Cashback sites

  • Quidco: 4% cashback (best available rate at the time of writing this post)

  • TopCashback: 3.67% for new customers, 1.57% for existing customers

Tesco Clubcard

Clubcard vouchers convert to three times their face value when used on Wightlink bookings. So £10 in vouchers becomes £30 toward your crossing. This cannot be combined with cashback (cashback only tracks when you pay with real money), so it is worth calculating which option saves you more based on your voucher balance. Example: £10 in Clubcard vouchers = £30 toward your ferry crossing.

Alternative Routes Worth Considering

  • Portsmouth to Fishbourne: better if you are staying in East Wight

  • Portsmouth to Ryde (Hovertravel): foot passengers only, but the fastest crossing at around 10 minutes

  • Southampton to East Cowes: worth checking for seasonal offers

Dog owners: all Wightlink ferries allow dogs to travel free.

Budget Strategies That Work

1. Pre-Order Your Groceries

We organise a supermarket delivery to the property, choosing whichever has the best deals and lowest delivery charge at the time. Everyone contributes to a shared pot, and we cook together. It saves hundreds on restaurant meals and genuinely becomes part of the holiday.

First-night tradition: fish and chips from a local takeaway. Everyone chips into the pot, no one has to cook, and it sets the perfect relaxed tone for the week.

2. Maximise Free Entry Passes

If you hold an English Heritage family pass, it gives free entry to Carisbrooke Castle, Osborne House, and Yarmouth Castle. Check the current English Heritage website for pass availability and expiry dates before your trip, as offer windows change each year. Saving up to £75 across the three sites makes it well worth checking.

3. Use Local Discount Sites

The Price is Wight deal site covers attractions, restaurants, and activities across the Island and is worth browsing before you finalise your plans.

Best Family Activities on the Isle of Wight

The Island works brilliantly at any time of year. Outside of the summer peak, you get quieter beaches and shorter queues, while summer itself brings the best weather for coastal days. Whatever season you visit, here is how to make the most of it without overspending.

Free or Nearly Free

Fossil Hunting at Compton Bay and Brook Beach: Bring a magnifying glass, a fossil ID guide (borrow one from the library for free), and waterproof bags. Go at low tide for the best finds. You can check tide times online to plan the best time for you and your family to visit. It's free to visit the beaches, though you can expect to pay for parking locally. Cheaper parking sites like JustPark might offer discounted parking, so it's worth checking.

The Needles Landmark Attraction: Skip the paid rides and walk the cliff path instead. The views are spectacular year-round. Free entry. Parking charges apply seasonally, so check current rates before you go, and also check their website for any special offers running.

Skip the paid rides and walk the cliff path instead, but if you have kids, this racing car track is worth spending a few quid on!

You'll find fun things to do at the Needles for the whole family, just expect it to cost you a few quid!

Fort Victoria Country Park: Woodland trails, coastal paths, and a small planetarium. A good option if rain sets in during the day. Free entry. Planetarium tickets cost around £6 for adults and £4 for children.

Quarr Abbey: Peaceful gardens, a free art gallery, resident pigs the kids will love, and a small shop selling monk-made fudge. Free entry with donations welcome.

Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary: Free entry (a donation box is provided), and one of the most wholesome hours you will spend all week. The kids can help groom the donkeys and hear their rescue stories. Located at Lower Winstone Farm, Wroxall.

Worth the Spend

  • Carisbrooke Castle – Free with an English Heritage pass. Without one, family tickets cost around £30.80 (two adults, up to three children)., but you may be able to save 15% off the cost by booking your tickets in advance. Climb the ramparts, watch the famous donkeys work the well at 11 am and 2 pm, and explore 1,000 years of history.

  • Isle of Wight Steam Railway – Entrance to the attraction is free, but if you want to ride a train, then for the 3rd class train ride, you'll pay £29.50 on the day for 1 adult and up to 3 children, with additional child tickets priced at £11.00. Book online to save money on your entrance fees, rather than paying at the gate on the day you visit.

  • Ventnor Botanic Garden – You'll pay £32 for a family entry, which is 2 adults and 3 children aged between 6 and 16 years old, with free return within 7 days. Pack a lunch and use the picnic areas to keep costs down.

  • Model Village at Godshill – Entry costs £28.50 for a family ticket (two adults, up to two children). A quick visit, but children love the intricate miniature detail. RHS members can get free entry on a Monday or a Friday.

Check directly with each attraction for current pricing before you visit, as admission costs change.

Rainy Day Backup Plans

The house has games, films, and space to spread out. But if you need to escape:

  • Isle of Wight Bus and Coach Museum (Ryde): free and surprisingly engaging

  • Dinosaur Isle (Sandown): free entry to look at fossils, interactive exhibits, and a gift shop. You can go on a guided walk, which you'll need to book by calling 01983 404344.

  • Quay Arts Centre (Newport): You'll find exhibitions, café, and workshops and activities. (Some are free, some cost money) And you can view their what's on section for info on what's on and when.

  • Cineworld (Newport): use Tesco Clubcard vouchers for three times their face value on tickets, or check your loyalty cards, or your energy provider/phone provider apps for special deals on tickets and the cashback app JamDoughnut offers cashback on Cineworld tickets, so you don't have to pay face value on movie tickets! (Use referral code PPUK for signing up to JamDoughnut, and you'll get a £3 sign-up bonus)

Bring playing cards, board games, and baking ingredients. Our family quiz night has become as much of a tradition as the beach walks.

Money-Saving Tips We've Learned Over The Years

There are lots of lovely beaches you can visit that won't cost you anything, except parking charges. Yes, the weather isn't always on your side, but actually, I personally enjoy a windy, cloudy day at the beach as it 'blows the cobwebs away'!

There are also plenty of walking routes scattered around the Island, and I have enjoyed several early morning walks whilst visiting with my family.

There are also plenty of walking routes scattered around the Island, and I have enjoyed several early morning walks whilst visiting with my family. There is something genuinely special about being out on the coastal paths before anyone else is up, with the Solent stretching out below you and nothing but birdsong and the distant sound of a ferry crossing. It is one of those rare moments when the free option is also the best.

I find walking a lovely way to properly explore the Island, away from the car parks and queues, at a pace where you actually notice things. A hidden bench with a view, a field of wildflowers, a stretch of beach that the crowds have not found yet; the Island rewards slow exploration in a way that rushing between paid attractions simply does not.

A few photos taken on my morning walks around the Yarmouth area.

I would never turn down company, but I will admit that an early solo walk has its own particular charm. There is something quietly restorative about an hour to yourself with a good pair of boots and no plan beyond following the path to see where it leads. Sometimes nicer, as I may have mentioned to my family on more than one occasion.

If you want a starting point, the Isle of Wight Walking Festival runs every May and includes guided walks to suit all abilities, with a Wightlink ferry discount attached. But honestly, the Island's network of footpaths is good enough that you can simply pick a direction and go.

Transport on the Island

You do not need a car for everything. The Southern Vectis bus network is excellent and covers all major attractions.

  • Family Day Pass: around £29.50 for unlimited 24-hour travel (up to five people)

  • Week passes are available for longer stays

Cycling is also worth considering. The Red Squirrel Trail (32km) is flat and family-friendly. Bike hire from Wight Cycle Hire costs around £22 per day for an adult bike, £12 for a child bike, £45 for an e-bike, and £44 for a tandem. Multi-day rates are available, with a seven-day adult hire from around £100. Check their current pricing before booking.

Accommodation Hacks

Look for the blue suitcase icon on Visit Isle of Wight accommodation listings, which indicates properties offering ferry discounts to guests. Always book accommodation through a cashback site to stack an additional saving on top.

Loyalty schemes that work here include Tesco Clubcard (Wightlink, Hoseasons, Best Western), Nectar Points (accepted at some Isle of Wight B&Bs), and Avios (convertible to hotel bookings).

Pack These Essentials

Waterproof jackets (it gets windy, so secure them well), layers for changeable weather, reusable water bottles (free refill points are available across the Island), a fossil guidebook borrowed from the library, and beach towels for rock pooling. Take a change of clothes and footwear for anyone who gets wet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Isle of Wight expensive? The ferry is your highest cost, but once you are across, paid attractions typically range from £28 to £50 for families, and many of the best things (beaches, fossil hunting, coastal walks) are free. Self-catering saves hundreds over eating out.

What is the cheapest way to cross? Use the Wightlink Best Fare Finder to spot the lowest fares on your dates, book early, and use a cashback site such as Quidco. During school holidays, the Kids Go Free offer on foot passenger day returns can significantly reduce costs for families travelling without a car.

When is the best time to visit with children? Any school holiday works well. Summer brings the best beach weather but the biggest crowds. Easter and the October break offer quieter beaches, lower prices, and better fossil-hunting when the shoreline is not crowded. Just pack waterproofs, whatever the time of year.

Can I visit without a car? Absolutely. Foot passenger tickets are much cheaper, the bus network covers everywhere, and bike hire adds flexibility. It is genuinely pleasant at a slower pace.

How early should I book? For any school holiday, book ferries six to eight weeks ahead. Book accommodation earlier if you want coastal properties or family-sized houses, particularly for summer and October.

What about food allergies? Most restaurants and cafés handle dietary requirements well. Self-catering gives you complete control. The large Tesco in Newport stocks a good selection of free-from products.

Why The Isle Of Wight Works For Families

The Island feels different once the schools break up. The beaches open up, the pace slows down, and the activities that matter most to children (fossil hunting, castle exploring, steam trains) are waiting, whatever the season. Visit in summer for the best weather, go in spring or autumn for the quietest beaches and the shortest queues.

For our family, it has become the trip we look forward to. Not because we spend a fortune, but because we do not have to.

Take Action

The Isle of Wight is right there, just across the water. Make this the school holiday you remember.
