Warm Home Discount - Are You Eligible?

Updated: Nov 12, 2019

What is the warm home discount?

The warm home discount is a one-off payment of £140 that goes towards your heating costs, ideal for the cold winter weather.

Normally this is paid directly to your energy supplier who will then apply the discount to your bills.

Those customers with a pre-payment meter, don't miss out, they can claim a £140 voucher that you can use to top up your account.

The warm home discount applies between September and March and can also be used towards a gas bill if you have the same supplier for both gas and electricity.

There are two ways you can be eligible for the payment, not everyone can claim it:

If you get the guarantee credit element of pension credit you'll be in what's called the "core group"if you're on a low income and meet your supplier's criteria you'll be in what's referred to as the "broader group".

How do I apply for the discount?

Core group

If you're in the "core" group of people who get the discount, as of July 7, 2019 all of the following must have been applicable:

  1. Your energy supplier was part of the scheme

  2. Your name (or your partner’s) was on the bill

  3. You were getting the guarantee credit element of pension credit (even if you get savings credit as well).

You should receive a letter before December telling you how to get the discount.

This letter will also say if you need to call the helpline by February 28, 2020 to confirm your details.

If you don't get a letter:

Contact the Warm Home Discount helpline on 0800 7310214. The line is open from Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm

or you can write to them via:

Do not contact the Warm Home Discount helpline if you’re not eligible for the ‘core group’. Check if you’re eligible to apply another way.

Broader Group

You may be able to apply directly to your electricity supplier for help if you do not get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit if:

  1. Your energy supplier is part of the scheme

  2. You’re on a low income

  3. You get certain means-tested benefits

To get the discount you’ll need to stay with your supplier until it’s paid.

How to apply

Your electricity supplier decides who can get the discount - check with your supplier to see if you’re eligible and how to apply.

Check with your supplier as early as possible. The number of discounts suppliers can give are limited.

Your electricity supplier will apply the discount to your bill by 31 March 2020
