IKEA Student Discount: How to Get £20 Off and Extra Cashback

If you're heading to university or returning for another term, the current IKEA student discount can take £10 off a £75 qualifying shop or £20 off when you spend at least £150. The offer is available to verified students aged 18 or over and can be used for qualifying IKEA home furnishings online or in UK stores between the 10th of August and the 25th of October.

You only get one use of the coupon, so if you're planning several purchases, it makes sense to think carefully about which shop will give you the best value from it.

There are a few changes from the IKEA student offer I covered previously. Student status is now verified through Student Beans, rather than SheerID, and IKEA has added other student-focused offers alongside the main £10 or £20 coupon. There is also still an opportunity to reduce the final cost through gift-card cashback, although the cashback rate is lower than when I originally wrote this guide, but still worth it!

How does the IKEA student discount work?

The main IKEA student discount gives you £10 off when you spend at least £75, or £20 off when you spend at least £150 on qualifying home furnishing products in one transaction.

The £20 option works out at a maximum discount of around 13.3% if you spend exactly £150, while the £10 option gives roughly the same percentage reduction at £75.

Spending significantly more than the qualifying amount reduces the percentage saving, so there is no extra discount for taking a £150 basket up to £250.

The coupon works online and in IKEA UK stores, with the discount applied when the valid code is added at checkout. It can only be redeemed once during the offer period, and you need to reach the qualifying spend in the same transaction.

This is particularly useful if you're setting up student accommodation and already need furniture, bedding or other household basics, but before building a £150 basket simply to reach the higher discount, check what your accommodation already provides and what you genuinely need, because spending another £40 to unlock an extra £10 discount is still £30 more out of your bank account.

How do you get the IKEA student discount?

You need to verify your student status through IKEA's student offer page and Student Beans. Once verification is completed, your coupon is sent to the email address registered with your IKEA Family account, ready to use online or in store. IKEA recommends getting the code before travelling to a store rather than trying to complete the verification when you reach the checkout.

You also need an IKEA Family account, which is free to join. Your IKEA Family email address doesn't have to be the same as your student email, and IKEA actually points out that using a personal email for the Family account can make sense because you may lose access to a university email after graduating. If you already have an IKEA Family account, there is no need to create another one.

Student Beans verification is one of several student discount services worth knowing about while you're studying. Can you get the IKEA student discount without a university email?

Yes, IKEA says you can still verify your status if you've been accepted as a student but don't have a university email address yet. You can enter another email address and then provide a document confirming that you are currently enrolled. This means students who haven't received their university login details shouldn't automatically assume they have to wait before claiming the offer.

IKEA lists a student ID card with an expiry date, class schedule, tuition receipt, transcript or official letter as examples of documents that may be used. The document needs to show your first and last name, the name of the educational establishment and a date confirming current enrolment. The verification process decides whether the evidence supplied is sufficient.

There is also a country restriction worth knowing about if you're studying overseas. IKEA says a UK IKEA Family account and the coupon issued to it are only valid in the country where the account was created, so a UK coupon can't simply be taken to an IKEA store in Ireland or another country.

What can't you buy with the IKEA student discount?

The IKEA student discount is limited to qualifying home furnishing products, so several parts of an IKEA trip don't count towards it. IKEA specifically excludes its restaurants, cafés, Bistro and Swedish Food Market, along with IKEA gift cards, Home Service Points and paid services such as home delivery, assembly, installation and kitchen planning. Re-shop and Re-use purchases are also excluded.

That is important if you're trying to reach the £75 or £150 threshold. A £140 furniture basket plus £10 delivery doesn't become a qualifying £150 spend simply because the final bill reaches that figure, because the delivery service sits outside the promotion. Build your calculation around eligible home furnishing products rather than the total amount you expect to hand over.

The coupon can't be used alongside another promotional offer or discount either. That restriction becomes especially relevant this term because IKEA is advertising several other offers to students at the same time, and you shouldn't assume the £20 student coupon can be layered over a separate promotional price.

What other IKEA student offers are available?

IKEA is currently promoting a £49 Student Box containing selected cookware, dinnerware and utensils, compared with a regular combined price of £52.50.

The offer runs from the 3rd of August until the 31st of October and is available in IKEA stores rather than online. The saving is £3.50, or roughly 6.7%, so the bigger question is whether the contents match what you actually need for your accommodation.

There is also 20% off when you buy a qualifying GULVIAL towel set made up of one bath sheet, one bath towel, one hand towel and one wash cloth together. That offer is listed as running from the 3rd of August until the 27th of October, is in-store only and is subject to availability. If you only need one towel, buying four products to trigger a discount is unlikely to be the cheapest answer.

Both offers are separate promotions rather than part of the main £10 or £20 student coupon. IKEA's student coupon terms say it can't be used with another promotional offer or discount, so I wouldn't plan a basket on the assumption that you can combine these offers. Check what the till or online checkout accepts before making your final buying decision.

What is the IKEA MICKE desk offer?

The MICKE corner workstation is currently £149 for IKEA Family members, down from its regular £189 price, which saves £40. The white corner desk measures 100cm by 142cm and includes shelving, cable management and a magnetic notice board. The promotional price is listed as valid until the 31st of August or while stock lasts.

This is an IKEA Family promotional price, so don't assume the separate student coupon can reduce it again. The student-discount terms rule out combining the voucher with another promotional discount, and the £149 price is already presented as an IKEA Family offer.

Can you stack the IKEA student discount with JamDoughnut cashback?

There may still be an extra saving available through JamDoughnut, because it sells IKEA gift cards and pays instant cashback when you buy one. At the time I checked, JamDoughnut's public IKEA listing was showing 1.75% instant cashback, although cashback rates move regularly and the rate shown in your app when you buy should be treated as the one that matters.

IKEA's student terms say the discount can't be used to buy an IKEA gift card, but they don't list paying for qualifying products with an existing IKEA gift card as an exclusion, as theres no reason why they would, its just a payment method after all!

JamDoughnut's IKEA gift card is for IKEA spending, so the sensible way to approach this is to get your student discount applied first, check the exact balance due, and then buy the gift card you need. This avoids loading more money onto a retailer gift card than you intended to spend.

For example, suppose your qualifying IKEA basket costs exactly £150. Applying the £20 student coupon leaves £130 to pay, and 1.75% cashback on a £130 JamDoughnut IKEA gift card would be about £2.28, taking the combined reduction to roughly £22.28.

What else can help cut the cost of an IKEA student shop?

Start with IKEA Family before paying full price, because the free membership now includes member prices, offers and a points-based rewards scheme. A promotional member price can sometimes be worth more than the student coupon on a particular product, even though the two discounts can't be combined. Compare both options rather than assuming the word "student" guarantees the lowest final price.

The Re-shop and Re-use section can also be worth checking for ex-display, returned and pre-owned products. The student coupon doesn't apply there, but a sufficiently reduced item could still cost less than buying the standard product with 10% or 13% knocked off, plus it has the buy back option too.

I've previously bought something from IKEA at aroun d half its intended price simply because it had a minor cosmetic mark that was going to be hidden in my setup anyway.

Avoid buying everything on a standard university checklist before seeing your accommodation. Shared kitchens can end up with several kettles and toasters while nobody has the one pan or storage container everybody actually needs, so coordinating with housemates can prevent duplicate spending.

Is the IKEA student discount worth using?

The IKEA student discount is most useful when you were already close to one of the qualifying spending levels. A £75 eligible basket dropping to £65 or a £150 basket dropping to £130 represents a meaningful reduction, but adding products you didn't need solely to reach those thresholds can wipe out the benefit. The offer works best as a discount on a planned shop rather than a target you need to hit.

Check IKEA Family prices at the same time because the current student coupon can't be combined with another promotion. The £149 MICKE example shows why this matters, as its £40 IKEA Family reduction is already twice the maximum £20 student coupon, although it applies to one specific product.

Comparing the final price rather than simply collecting every available code gives you a clearer idea of which route actually saves more.

If you're planning to use gift-card cashback as well, leave that until the final stage. Verify your student status, build the qualifying basket, apply the IKEA coupon, confirm what you owe and then check the live cashback rate before buying a gift card for the remaining amount. That keeps the saving useful without leaving money tied up unnecessarily on an IKEA gift card.
