1. EDF’s £30 million winter package includes £6 million for energy debt relief and debt matching.

When you’re already behind on your energy bill, turning the heating on more often can make it harder to see how you’ll catch up. If EDF supplies your home, its Customer Support Fund may be able to help with that existing debt, alongside practical support with essential appliances.

EDF has set aside £30 million to support vulnerable customers during 2026/27, with the package announced on the 13th of October. Of that total, £6 million is for debt relief and debt matching, while £24 million covers existing support services. There isn’t a fixed payment for every customer, so the useful next step is to find out which help fits your situation.

This guide provides general information rather than personal financial advice. A free debt adviser can help you work through your own bills and repayment options.

What help does the EDF Customer Support Fund offer?

The EDF Customer Support Fund can help with gas or electricity arrears and essential white goods, such as a fridge or cooker. That could mean support with a balance you haven’t been able to clear, or help replacing a broken appliance when your budget won’t stretch to another one.

The wider package also includes heaters, eligible gas safety checks and help for customers with additional needs. These services are part of the £30 million total, which is why describing the whole amount as money available to pay off bills would give the wrong impression.

EDF reports that its fund cleared around £2.5 million of debt last year and that more than 85% of recipients of debt relief through its support schemes remained debt-free after 12 months. That gives some context for the scheme, but it doesn’t tell you how much an individual application will receive.

How do you apply for help with your EDF energy debt?

Start by getting independent debt advice, then follow the application route from EDF’s support-fund page. EDF’s free debt-advice information directs customers to Citizens Advice Plymouth, which can help with money worries, benefits and grants as well as energy debt.

Have your EDF account number, the current debt balance on each EDF account and details of your household finances ready. Explain any health condition, disability or other circumstances that affect your energy needs or ability to manage the account. For example, needing to use more heating because of a health condition gives the adviser a fuller understanding of why your bills are difficult to afford.

The application is handled through Charis, EDF’s support-fund partner. Its current fund information and application route also explains the budget planning involved, including working out what’s left after essential spending and priority bills.

Will the fund clear your debt immediately?

Debt support can come with a payment plan that you need to complete before the balance is cleared. Under the route described by Charis, an accepted application leads to an agreed plan and a pause in debt activity; the debt is cleared after sufficient payments have been made.

If you don’t keep up with those payments, the award can be withdrawn, leaving the original debt and any further arrears outstanding. Ask what you’ll need to pay, how long the arrangement will last and what happens if your circumstances change before agreeing to a plan.

The winter announcement also includes debt matching, but doesn’t publish one matching rate or award amount for everyone. Let EDF explain the offer available to you rather than assuming each pound you pay will receive a particular top-up.

What if you need practical help as well as money?

EDF’s Priority Services Register is a free service for customers who need extra support. Depending on your circumstances, help can include bills in large print or Braille, assistance with meter readings and arrangements for a trusted person to receive your bills and letters.

Tell EDF if you rely on essential medical equipment that needs electricity, so your needs can be recorded and shared with the relevant network operator. Eligible customers can also apply for a free gas safety check, although this has its own conditions and application process.

Joining the register doesn’t automatically clear your debt or approve a grant. It gives EDF a better understanding of the practical support you need alongside any separate application for financial help.

What should you do if you’re struggling now?

Contact EDF before waiting for a fund decision, particularly if the next payment is more than you can afford. Its energy-bill support team can discuss repayment arrangements based on your circumstances; the published contact number is 0333 006 9950, with opening hours of 8am to 6pm Monday to Thursday and 8am to 4pm on Friday.

If another company supplies your energy, ask that supplier about its own support. Citizens Advice has a guide to grants and benefits for energy bills that explains routes beyond EDF, so you don’t need to switch supplier to start asking for help.

For changes around the house, our guide to reducing energy bills covers heating, cooking and appliance use. If the immediate problem is an unpaid balance, start with the debt adviser and supplier: reducing future usage and dealing with money already owed are separate parts of getting the bill manageable again.

Frequently asked questions

Who can apply to the EDF Customer Support Fund?

The fund supports EDF customers in financial difficulty who are struggling with energy debt. You need independent debt advice before applying, and the support offered depends on your circumstances.

Will EDF clear my energy debt straight away?

You shouldn’t assume that it will. The current debt-support route can require you to complete an agreed payment plan before the debt is cleared.

Can EDF help with a broken fridge or cooker?

The Customer Support Fund can provide essential appliances, including fridges and cookers, subject to assessment. Ask about this when explaining your household’s needs.

Is the £30 million an automatic payment to EDF customers?

No. It covers several types of support, including £6 million for debt relief and debt matching, rather than a fixed payment to every customer.
