Is an Electric Bike Cheaper Than Public Transport in the UK?


A £2 bus fare or a single Tube journey can feel much cheaper than spending around £1,000 on an electric bike. The problem is that commuting costs are not paid once. They are repeated every working day, month after month.


For someone travelling into a UK city four or five days a week, those apparently small fares can add up to more than the cost of an electric bike within a year. However, the calculation changes significantly depending on where you live, how often you travel and whether you receive discounted public transport.

So, is an electric bike really cheaper? Let us compare the actual costs.


How Much Does Public Transport Cost UK Commuters?


There is no single UK public transport price. A commuter travelling through London can spend considerably more than someone using a local bus in Greater Manchester.


Commuting in London


For 2026, Transport for London charges the following adult fares for travel through Zones 1–3:

These prices cover the Tube, DLR, Elizabeth line, London Overground and most National Rail services within the relevant zones.


A full-time commuter buying the annual Zones 1–3 Travelcard therefore spends £2,100 a year before accounting for occasional journeys outside those zones.


Someone who works from home several days a week may spend less by using pay-as-you-go fares instead. Even so, travelling four days a week and regularly reaching the £10.50 daily cap could cost roughly £1,900 over 46 working weeks.


Commuting in Greater Manchester


Bus travel is much cheaper in Greater Manchester. A single adult journey costs £2, while a seven-day Bee Bus ticket costs £20 and a 28-day ticket costs £80.


Buying thirteen consecutive 28-day tickets would cost approximately:

£80 × 13 = £1,040 per year


This is around half the price of a London Zones 1–3 annual Travelcard. It also shows why an electric bike will pay for itself faster in some cities than others.


What Does Commuting by Electric Bike Actually Cost?


Buying the bike is only part of the calculation. A realistic first-year budget should also include a secure lock, basic equipment, electricity and maintenance.


For this comparison, we can use the Fiido C11 Pro as an example. As of July 2026, it costs £999 in the UK and has a 499.2Wh removable battery, a 250W motor, hydraulic disc brakes and a claimed range of up to 104km under the manufacturer’s testing conditions.

The equipment and maintenance figures are budgeting assumptions rather than fixed prices. A premium lock, specialist insurance, replacement tyres or unexpected repairs could increase the total.


Commuters should choose an electric commuter bike according to their real route, storage arrangements and riding frequency, not simply the longest advertised range.


How Much Does It Cost to Charge an Electric Bike?


Electricity is one of the smallest costs of owning an electric bike.


From 1 July to 30 September 2026, Ofgem’s average electricity unit rate for customers paying by Direct Debit on a standard variable tariff is 26.11p per kWh across England, Scotland and Wales.


The C11 Pro has a 499.2 Wh battery, equivalent to 0.4992kWh. Charging it from empty would therefore use electricity costing approximately:


0.4992kWh × £0.2611 = £0.13


Allowing for some energy lost during charging, a full charge can reasonably be estimated at around 15p.


Consider a commuter with the following journey:


  • Five miles each way

  • Ten miles per working day

  • 230 commuting days per year

  • Approximately 2,300 miles, or 3,700km, ridden annually


If the rider achieves between 50km and 70km between full charges, the annual electricity cost would be only around £8 to £11.


Cold weather, hills, strong winds, rider weight and higher assistance settings can reduce range. Even with these variables, charging remains far cheaper than buying bus, Tube or rail tickets.


How Long Does an Electric Bike Take to Pay for Itself?


The answer becomes clearer when the first-year bike budget is compared with annual public transport costs.


London Zones 1–3 Example


  • Annual Travelcard: £2,100

  • Estimated first-year electric bike cost: £1,279

  • Potential first-year difference: £821


At £175 per month for the annual Travelcard equivalent, the £1,279 bike budget would be recovered in approximately seven to eight months.


Over three years, the difference becomes more substantial:

The electric bike estimate includes the £999 purchase price, £150 in initial equipment, £120 in annual maintenance, and £10 in annual charging.


It does not include insurance, theft, accident damage, unusually expensive repairs or a future battery replacement. The public transport calculation also assumes that fares remain unchanged for all three years, making it a conservative comparison if fares rise.

The electric bike is still cheaper in this example, but the financial advantage develops more slowly because Manchester bus travel costs much less than London rail and Tube travel.


Can the Cycle to Work Scheme Reduce the Cost?


The Cycle to Work Scheme can make the calculation more favourable for eligible employees.

Under a typical salary-sacrifice arrangement, an employee gives up part of their pre-tax salary in exchange for the hire of a bicycle and qualifying safety equipment.


The arrangement can reduce the Income Tax and National Insurance paid on the sacrificed salary, although the exact terms depend on the employer and scheme provider.


For the 2026–27 tax year, the basic Income Tax rate in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is 20%, while the main employee National Insurance rate is 8% within the relevant earnings band.


In a simplified example, an employee whose entire £999 sacrifice falls within those bands could reduce the effect on take-home pay to approximately:


£999 × 72% = £719


A higher-rate taxpayer paying 40% Income Tax and 2% National Insurance could see a take-home pay effect of closer to £579.


These are illustrations, not guaranteed purchase prices. Scheme charges, hire periods, end-of-hire ownership arrangements, salary levels and employer rules can change the final cost. Scottish Income Tax bands also differ from those in the rest of the UK.


Do UK E-Bikes Need Tax or Insurance?


An electric bike that meets the UK definition of an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle is treated broadly like a conventional bicycle.


To qualify, it must:


  • Have pedals capable of propelling it

  • Use a motor with a maximum continuous rated power of no more than 250W

  • Stop providing electrical assistance at 15.5mph

  • Be ridden by someone aged 14 or older


A compliant EAPC does not require vehicle registration, Vehicle Excise Duty, a driving licence or compulsory motor insurance.


Insurance is still worth considering, particularly for an expensive bike stored in a public location. A strong lock and secure workplace storage are also essential parts of the financial calculation: the cheapest commute is no longer cheap if the bike is stolen.


When Is Public Transport the Better Choice?


An electric bike is not automatically the cheapest or most practical option for everyone.


Public transport may remain better when:


  • You commute only once or twice a week

  • Your employer pays some or all of your travel costs

  • You qualify for discounted or free travel

  • Your route includes a long intercity train journey

  • You have nowhere secure to store a bike

  • The journey is unsuitable for safe cycling

  • You need to carry equipment that cannot fit safely on the bike

  • A health or mobility condition makes cycling impractical


Many people do not need to choose one mode exclusively. An electric bike can be used during spring and summer, while public transport remains available during severe weather. It can also replace only the most expensive section of a journey, for example, riding to a railway station rather than paying for a connecting bus or car park.


What Is the Best Electric Bike for Commuting UK Roads?


For anyone searching for the best electric bike for commuting on UK roads and in UK weather, the right model depends on budget, distance, and maintenance preferences.


Fiido C11: Best for Budget-Conscious Commuters


The Fiido C11 costs £908 at the time of writing. It has a 499.2Wh removable battery, hydraulic brakes, a 55Nm motor and a claimed range of up to 90km.


It is the lowest-priced option of the three and is suited to commuters who want a practical step-through city bike without paying extra for a torque sensor.


Fiido C11 Pro: Best All-Round Commuting Option


At £999, the C11 Pro adds a torque sensor that adjusts assistance in response to pedalling effort. It also includes a 499.2Wh removable battery, 55 Nm of torque, hydraulic brakes, and a claimed range of up to 104km.


It makes the most sense for frequent commuters who regularly encounter hills, travel longer distances, or prefer smoother, more responsive assistance.


Fiido C700: Best for Low-Maintenance City Riding


The Fiido C700 is the premium option at £1,545. It uses a Gates carbon belt drive instead of a conventional chain, together with a torque sensor, 250W motor and hydraulic disc brakes. Its stated range is up to 83.14km.


A belt drive is attractive to commuters who want a quieter system with less routine cleaning and lubrication, particularly when riding to work in everyday clothing.


When choosing an ebike, consider the full journey rather than comparing specifications alone. The best option should fit the route, rider, storage space and weekly travel pattern.


So, Is an Electric Bike Cheaper?


For a full-time commuter, particularly one paying London Tube or rail prices, an electric bike can be substantially cheaper than public transport.


A London commuter spending £2,100 a year on Zones 1–3 travel could potentially recover a £1,279 first-year electric bike budget within eight months. A Manchester bus commuter may need closer to 15 months because local bus fares are lower.


For someone who travels to work only occasionally, receives discounted transport or has no secure bicycle storage, public transport may remain the more sensible choice.


The simplest way to evaluate your own journey is:


Break-even time = total first-year electric bike cost ÷ current monthly public transport spending


Use your actual bank statements rather than an average national figure. Once repeated fares, charging, maintenance and the Cycle to Work Scheme are included, the cheaper option often becomes much easier to identify.
