Lebara SIM-Only Deals: Could You Cut Your Mobile Bill?

If your phone still does everything you need, the end of your contract doesn't have to mean shopping for a replacement. Keeping it and moving to a SIM-only plan lets you pay for calls, texts and mobile data without buying another handset. That could leave you with a smaller bill and a phone you're already happy using.

Lebara SIM-only deals are worth comparing if you want a lower-cost plan, particularly if you also call friends or family overseas. Whether one will save you money depends on your current bill, the allowance you need and the signal where you use your phone. A cheap plan won't feel like much of a saving if you can't make a call from your kitchen.

Start with how much mobile data you use

Open your current provider's app or look through your last few bills to see how much data you've used. If you're usually connected to Wi-Fi at home and work, you may need far less than someone who watches videos on the train or uses their phone to connect a laptop to the internet. Look at several months so you don't choose a plan based on an unusually quiet week.

For example, if you regularly use around 6GB, compare plans with a little room above that before paying for unlimited data. Think about any changes coming up, such as a new commute or working away from Wi-Fi. Paying for an allowance you won't use takes money from your budget without giving you anything back.

What does Lebara offer?

UK SIM provider Lebara offers SIM-only plans using Vodafone's network, with international minutes included for eligible destinations. Its range includes 30-day and 12-month options, so check which type you're choosing before signing up. Don't assume the renewal and cancellation arrangements are identical across every offer.

Start with a plan that covers your normal usage, then compare its price with similar allowances elsewhere. Included international minutes could be valuable if you make those calls regularly. If you rarely call anyone abroad, give more weight to the data allowance, coverage and total cost.

Check the places where you'll use it

Check coverage around your home, workplace and any places you visit regularly. A strong signal in the town centre doesn't guarantee the same service inside your house or along your route to work. If you know somebody who uses Lebara nearby, asking about their experience can help alongside the coverage checker.

Make sure your phone is compatible with the service and SIM option you choose. An older handset may need unlocking if it's restricted to your previous provider. If you're choosing an eSIM, which is downloaded to the phone instead of inserted as a plastic card, check support for your exact model.

Compare the price after the introductory offer

A reduced price for the first few months can be a good saving, but the price afterwards matters just as much if you plan to stay. Add up what you'll pay over the period you're comparing, including any advertised increases or upfront charges.

As an illustrative example, a plan costing £3 a calendar month for three months and £10 a month for the following nine would cost £99 over a year. A comparable plan at £8 a month throughout would cost £96. Those aren't live Lebara prices, but they show how the lowest starting price can become the more expensive option over time.

Put a reminder in your phone before an introductory offer ends. You'll have time to compare again and decide whether to stay, change your allowance or move elsewhere. Check cancellation and renewal terms before assuming you can leave a longer plan without a charge.

Calling abroad and using your phone abroad are different

If you're in the UK calling a relative's overseas phone number, you're making an international call. Lebara includes international minutes to eligible destinations, with the allowance depending on the plan. Check the country and type of number you need to call, including whether mobile and landline calls are both covered.

Roaming is when you take your phone abroad and use it there. Lebara advertises included EU roaming with a data limit of up to 30GB, so a large UK data allowance doesn't automatically mean you can use all of it on holiday. Check your destination, your plan's allowance and the charges beyond it through the roaming rate finder before travelling.

Could cashback reduce the cost further?

Before ordering, compare the direct offer with any eligible deals through cashback services such as TopCashback or Quidco. These services can pay you a reward for signing up through their links, but the available plans and qualifying conditions can differ. A bigger cashback amount doesn't help if it comes with a more expensive plan.

For example, a £20 reward wouldn't make up for paying an extra £3 a month across a year, which would cost £36 more. Check whether the offer requires you to remain a customer for a particular period, and start your order through the cashback service if you choose that route.

How to switch and keep your number

Check whether leaving your current plan would trigger an early exit charge before ordering a replacement. For a single mobile number, text INFO to 85075 to check your contract status. If you want to keep that number, text PAC to 65075 from your existing SIM and give the switching code to your new provider.

Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, explains the process in its mobile switching guide. Requesting a code doesn't complete the switch; you need to pass it to the new provider. If you're still paying separately for your handset, check that agreement too, because moving your mobile service doesn't wipe out the remaining phone payments.

Put the monthly saving to work

Reducing a bill by £5 a month would leave you with £60 over a year. That might help cover groceries, or you could put it aside for an expense that usually catches you short. If you're eligible for Help to Save, our guide to the 50% government bonus explains how the scheme rewards saving, with bonuses paid after two and four years.

Before you order a new SIM, have your current bill, recent data usage and the replacement plan's terms in front of you. Lebara may suit you well if its coverage and allowances match your needs, but compare the total cost with other providers too. The aim is a smaller bill for a service you'll be comfortable using every day.

Frequently asked questions

Which network does Lebara use in the UK?

Lebara uses Vodafone’s network. Check coverage at your home and workplace before ordering, because a national coverage figure won't tell you how well your phone will work inside a particular building.

Can I keep my number when switching to Lebara?

Yes. For a single mobile number, text PAC to 65075 from your existing SIM and give the code to your new provider. Check any early exit charges before completing the switch.

Are international calls the same as roaming?

No. International calling means calling an overseas number from the UK, while roaming means using your phone when you're abroad. Check both sets of allowances if you call relatives overseas and also travel.

Is Lebara the cheapest SIM-only provider?

That depends on the allowance you need and the offers available when you compare. Work out the cost after any introductory discount, then check coverage, renewal terms and the extras you'll actually use.
