Morrisons Brings Back Its £9.97 Meat Pack for the Bank Holiday

Returning just in time for the May Bank Holiday weekend from Friday 22nd May until Monday 25th May, the meat bundle includes around 2kg of 100% British meat, six juicy burgers, eight pork sausages, four pork loin steaks, and four beef sizzle steaks, all prepared in-store by Morrisons Market Street butchers.

Cheap BBQ Meat, Summer Drinks Deals and More Card Savings Return to Morrisons

There’s something about a bank holiday weekend that seems to trigger people into spending more money, especially one where the weather forecast looks incredibly promising, everyone gets excited that they'll actually be able to use the garden, and people start planning get-togethers, barbecues, and extra trips to the supermarket to stock up on sunny-weather food, and that can soon add up! Before the grill has even been lit, you can easily find yourself spending a small fortune!

So, with the good-looking weather this weekend and schools having broken up for half-term, plenty of households will be looking for cheaper ways to feed the family without completely destroying the household budget.

Burgers, sausages, drinks, snacks, buns, charcoal, sauces, ice, salads, and desserts all add up really quickly these days, especially during a cost-of-living crisis, when many households are already stretched before the weekend even begins.

That’s why Morrisons’ latest barbecue offers caught my attention because there are actually some genuinely good deals here.

Earlier this month, Morrisons launched a £9.97 meat pack deal, which got a lot of positive attention online, especially across social media, with shoppers showing off their meat pack hauls and talking about how much meat they were getting for the money and how they were using it to keep food costs down.

And I missed out on it, but with Morrisons now bringing back another £9.97 meat pack alongside a range of summer food and drinks offers (some tied into its More Card loyalty scheme), I’ll most certainly be grabbing one this time around, and I have to say, some of the pricing on the other offers looks genuinely decent too, even compared with some of the strong promotions other supermarkets are running right now as well.

Returning just in time for the May Bank Holiday weekend from Friday 22nd May until Monday 25th May, the meat bundle includes around 1.8kg of 100% British meat, six juicy burgers, eight pork sausages, four pork loin steaks, and four beef sizzle steaks, all prepared in-store by Morrisons Market Street butchers.

Buying all those items separately would cost around £15, so the £9.97 price tag represents a 33% saving, or a third off the normal price, which I think represents excellent value for money, but it being marketed as a BBQ pack might put a few people off... The deal is being marketed around a sunny bank holiday weekend, which makes sense, after all I cant think of a better time for a barbie, but if you arent a throw some meat on a grill kind of person, or don't want/can't have a barbecue, the deal might go over your head, but money savvy shoppers should strip away that “barbecue” marketing angle, and understand this deal is actaully a cheap way to buy nearly 2kg of meat that can be used to feed the family over the bank holiday weekend, half term and beyond!

There’s absolutely no reason that meat has to be cooked outside on a barbecue!

Those burgers do not have to stay burgers; chop them up, and you’ve got mince that could become chilli con carne, spaghetti bolognese, tacos, or shepherd’s pie. You’re looking at around 500g of meat for the equivalent of about £2.50, which feels like great value considering how expensive mince has become in 2026!

Look at the sausages, sure, eat them as sausages, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, but remove the meat from the casings, and you can quickly turn them into meatballs, use them to make sausage pasta, or use the sausage meat in other meals, such as toad in the hole, which is a good shout because it’s still one of the cheaper and more filling family dinners you can make, and always a winner in my house!

The pork and beef steaks could easily be turned into stir-fry strips or fajita fillings, or added to noodle or rice dishes. Because this is fresh meat, it can all be frozen for another day, too; you don't need to use everything immediately.

That’s where the value of this deal starts making proper sense; the mistake would be looking at this purely as a “one barbecue” purchase, as it isn’t, because you’ve potentially got enough meat there to make four or more separate family meals from one pack, working out at roughly £2.50 per meal.

But is the quality any good?

Morrisons generally has a pretty decent reputation for its meat products, and having worked for Morrisons myself, I think the quality is usually pretty good, especially compared with some competitors' products.

This deal was available online earlier in the month, and needless to say, plenty of people headed online afterwards to share what they got and give their thoughts on the quality, and overall, the general consensus actually seemed pretty positive. Most people felt the pack offered decent quality for the money and was genuinely good value considering the amount of meat included for under a tenner.

There were a few comments from people saying the steak was a little tough, but a lot of that comes down to both the cut itself and how it’s cooked, but there's an element of a 'bad workman always blames his tools', here and actually, the 'chef' just doesn't know how to cook this cut of meat correctly!

It’s worth remembering this is sizzle steak, which traditionally isn’t the most premium or tender cut of beef anyway. You’re not getting ribeye or sirloin here, and realistically, at this price point, nobody should really expect that.

That doesn’t mean it can’t still be really nice, though! The trick with thinner cuts like sizzle steak is not overcooking them, which a lot of people accidentally do, especially on barbecues where the heat can be all over the place. Ideally, you want an extremely hot grill or pan, and cook the steak for about 90 seconds on each side for medium-rare. Once it comes off the heat, wrap it loosely in foil and let it rest for five minutes before slicing it thinly against the grain. That resting time makes a huge difference and helps keep the meat far more tender.

If that style of cooking isn’t really your thing, there are loads of other ways to use it too. You could braise it slowly, throw it into a slow cooker with stock and vegetables for a few hours, and it’ll become much softer and richer. In fact, cuts like this often work brilliantly in casseroles and slow-cooked dishes; I'd make a stroganoff with it, cooked low and slow.

And if you are planning to throw it on the barbecue, marinating it overnight can really help as well. Acidic marinades using ingredients like yoghurt, buttermilk, or lemon or lime juice help break down the connective tissue in the meat, giving you a much more tender texture, while adding some spices to the marinade also adds flavour; I'd go with Cajun seasoning as it works well with beef and adds a lovely spicy, smoky flavour.

So no, you’re probably not getting restaurant-quality steak here, but equally, for £9.97 for the full pack of meat, I don’t think most shoppers are expecting that either. What people are looking for is decent-quality meat at a strong price point, and from what I’ve seen in both the reviews and the online reaction, Morrisons seems to have done a pretty good job of delivering that.

And who says you only have to buy one?

Morrisons is allowing shoppers to buy two packs at a time online (in-store, you may be able to buy more), meaning for just under £20, you could be looking at more than four kilos of meat, which would fill the freezer quite nicely!

And if you’ve got smaller eaters in the family, or younger children, you could stretch that food even further, which is especially useful during half term when parents are dealing with needing to provide extra lunches, dinners, and snacks to seemingly permanently hungry children the second they break up from school!

Why Is Morrisons Selling It So Cheap?

Obviously, supermarkets do not run promotions like this out of the kindness of their hearts! Yes, they’ll still make money from them, although usually on fairly low margins, but there’s actually a retail term for these sorts of heavily promoted offers; they’re often referred to as “doorbusters.”

When I worked for a well-known electrical retailer years ago, the concept was regularly used because it’s one of the oldest retail tactics, and you'd see these deals pop up during strong trading times such as bank holidays, Christmas, and Easter.

The idea is simple: retailers create a really strong-value, desirable product, advertise it heavily, pushing it out to the masses in the hope that shoppers come into the store for that specific deal. Once they’re there, retailers know many people will often buy other items alongside it!

That’s exactly what’ll happen with this Morrisons deal too! I missed out on the last £9.97 barbecue pack, but I’ll be heading in for this one. I’m going camping soon, so I need loads of other things, and if I'm honest, I’d probably have ended up shopping elsewhere for those bits, but now I’ll likely grab those camping drinks, snacks, and some other camping supplies while I’m already in Morrisons anyway, so Morrisons will pick up that extra business!

If somebody is planning a barbecue or family get-together, they probably won’t just buy the meat pack, as they’ll likely grab burger buns, drinks, sauces, salads, desserts, and all the other things that go alongside it, so that £9.97 sale becomes a £50, £60, or even £100 shop, and that's how Morrisons make their money, via impulse, add-on purchases!

That’s how these promotions work, and they work well because shoppers naturally spend more money when they’re shopping for occasions or events, rather than strictly sticking to a shopping list; it's easy to get drawn into the 'thrill' of shopping for something fun, and especially when you are entertaining friends and family as you want to be a good host, or of course perhaps you've been invited to an event and don’t want to turn up empty-handed and so get drawn into buying lots to take with you to share, or look like a great guest!

Supermarkets want people in the mood for the event, as once shoppers start thinking about the sunny weather, a barbecue, a garden party, or a family gathering, it becomes much easier for extra products to find their way into the trolley.

The important thing is simply being aware of it so you can make the deal work for you rather than overspending without realising it, and buy what you need and can use, rather than acting on impulse, and these days, few of us can afford to be impulsive when it comes to food shopping!

Bank Holiday Drinks Deals Running Alongside The BBQ Offers

Alongside the £9.97 meat packs, Morrisons is also running several drinks promotions tied into the bank holiday weekend and entertaining push, and some of the prices are actually pretty competitive compared with what we’re seeing elsewhere at the moment.

The standout deal is probably the 1L bottle of Pimm’s, which drops from a usual price of £24.50 down to £14 in England. Considering how expensive Pimm’s has become over the last few summers, that’s actually a fairly chunky saving if you’re planning garden get-togethers over the bank holiday weekend.

There are also offers on beer, spirits, prosecco, and soft drinks, including 2 for £20 on selected world beers, a £11 Carling 18-pack in England, and selected 1L spirits reduced to around £20.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the main offers currently running:

Scottish pricing is slightly higher on some alcohol products because of minimum unit pricing rules, so it’s worth remembering that prices can vary depending on where you live in the UK.

And if you are planning to host people over the bank holiday weekend or during half term, some of these prices are actually fairly decent. The “buy six, save 25%” wine offer could work particularly well if you’ve got multiple gatherings planned over the coming weeks, though obviously, only buy what you were planning to purchase anyway.

Again, though, this is where supermarkets are very clever. The well-promoted barbecue pack gets people through the door, but once shoppers are there buying meat for a barbecue or garden party, drinks deals like these suddenly become very tempting additions to the trolley.

Before long, what started as a £9.97 “cheap meat deal” becomes a much bigger shop, which is exactly what supermarkets hope will happen with these sorts of seasonal promotions.

That doesn’t mean the deals are bad, though, far from it! If you genuinely needed these items anyway, and especially if you’re hosting people over half-term or the bank holiday weekend, some of these prices are actually pretty competitive compared with normal supermarket pricing.

Of course, while some of these drink offers are genuinely decent value compared with normal supermarket pricing, it’s still important to drink responsibly over the bank holiday weekend and only buy what you realistically need.

If you regularly shop at Morrisons anyway, it’s also worth checking whether you can stack additional savings on top.

Always scan your More Card because you might already have personalised offers waiting in the app that work alongside the main promotion. If not, at the very least, you'll earn points that will get you closer to earning a More Card fiver that you can use to put towards a later purchase (5,000 points gets you a £5 More Card fiver and that can be spent online or in-store).

If you use cashback gift card apps like JamDoughnut, you can also earn around 3% to 4% cashback on buying a Morrisons gift card to pay (in-store only) for your shop, overpaying with a debit/credit card or cash; simply changing the method you use to pay for your shop can earn you, potentially, hundreds of pounds over the course of a year!

Paying for a meat pack with a gift card won't change your life overnight, but small savings like that genuinely add up over time, especially for households that spend a lot on groceries every month.

Should you buy the £9.97 Morrisons Meat Pack?

Overall, I think this £9.97 meat pack is one of the strongest supermarket deals around right now, not because it’s unbelievably cheap; it’s still basically a tenner, and for a lot of people, spending a tenner you can’t really afford on a gimmick, just isn’t realistic, but because of the amount of fresh meat you’re getting for the money, especially when factoring in how expensive meat has become, and if you use it cleverly and stretch it across multiple meals rather than just one barbecue, it can make a genuine difference to your food budget!
