Tesco Fuel Discount: Spend £60 and Get 8p Off a Litre

If your weekly food shop already comes to £60 and the car needs filling up, the Tesco fuel discount could take a few pounds off a purchase you were planning anyway. Spend £60 or more in one qualifying in-store transaction between the 1st and the 18th of October and you’ll receive a paper coupon for 8p off each litre of petrol or diesel. On a 50-litre fill, that’s £4 off your fuel bill, without needing a Clubcard to qualify.

The coupon can be used at participating Tesco-branded forecourts across Great Britain and Northern Ireland until Sunday the 25th of October, with a maximum saving of £8. You’ll need to pay at a staffed kiosk rather than use Pay at Pump, so take the paper voucher with you and check the kiosk’s opening hours before setting off. It’s also worth comparing local fuel prices, as an 8p discount won’t necessarily make Tesco cheaper than the station down the road.

The offer follows the recent Asda Rewards fuel discount, which gave shoppers 5p off a litre after a qualifying spend but has now ended.

How does the Tesco fuel offer work?

Complete your qualifying £60 shop in store, keep the paper coupon issued at the till, then hand it over when you pay for fuel at a participating Tesco kiosk. The current fuel coupon terms cover purchases from the 1st to the 18th of October, with all coupons expiring on the 25th of October.

You don't have to buy fuel on the same day as your groceries, which gives you a little time to fit the fill-up around your usual journeys.

The £60 threshold is calculated after discounts, promotions and coupons, so a basket priced at £62 could fall short if a £5 discount takes the qualifying spend down to £57. Your receipt also needs to cover one transaction, rather than two smaller shops added together.

Only one fuel coupon can be used on a fuel purchase, so you can't combine two vouchers to get 16p off each litre.

How much could the Tesco 8p fuel coupon save you?

The amount you save depends on how much fuel you buy, rather than how far over £60 your grocery bill goes. Each litre takes another 8p off the bill until you reach the £8 maximum. These examples show the saving on different fills, including what happens if you go beyond the amount needed to reach the cap.

For a 40-litre fill, you’re saving £3.20, while putting in 60 litres saves £4.80. You reach the full £8 discount at 100 litres, and buying more fuel won't increase it. The offer is also subject to minimum fuel purchase requirements, so follow the conditions on your coupon and at the pump if you’re only buying a very small amount.

Don’t spend extra just to get the Tesco fuel coupon

If your normal Tesco shop comes to £59, adding £1 of something you already need could be worthwhile. If it comes to £45 and you add £15 of things you wouldn’t otherwise buy just to save £3.20 on fuel, you’ve spent more overall. The same applies if you move your whole shop to Tesco and end up paying more for your groceries than the fuel voucher saves.

I use the same approach with supermarket loyalty schemes and cashback offers: start with what you actually need, then see whether a deal makes it cheaper. A coupon is useful when it reduces a bill you were already going to pay. It isn't a saving if getting it leaves you spending more than you planned on things you don't want.

What counts towards the £60 Tesco spend?

The offer is for qualifying in-store purchases, so a Tesco home delivery, Click & Collect order placed online or Whoosh order won't earn the fuel coupon. Some products and purchases at separate counters are also excluded. That matters most when you’re close to £60, because the total on your receipt and the amount that qualifies for the offer might be different.

For example, £58 of qualifying shopping plus £5 of postage stamps would still leave you below the threshold. Adding a carrier bag wouldn’t help either, because that charge doesn't count. If the coupon hasn't printed and you think your shop qualifies, ask at the checkout before leaving so the receipt can be checked while you’re still there.

Where can you use the Tesco fuel coupon?

You can redeem it at participating Tesco-branded forecourts in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Tesco Express stores selling Esso fuel and sites in the Isle of Man are excluded, so a Tesco shop next to a forecourt doesn't automatically mean the coupon will work there. Use Tesco’s store finder to look for a Tesco Petrol Filling Station and check that a staffed kiosk will be open when you visit.

The paper coupon has to be presented at the kiosk as part of the transaction in which you pay for your fuel. It can't be redeemed through Pay at Pump or at an unmanned petrol station. Keeping it with your payment card after the food shop can help you avoid arriving at the forecourt without it.

Can you use the Tesco fuel coupon at Pay at Pump?

No, you’ll need to use the staffed kiosk even if you normally pay at the pump. The discount depends on handing over the paper voucher when you pay, rather than simply scanning your Clubcard. If the kiosk is closed, come back when it’s open or use another participating forecourt before your coupon expires.

Is Tesco actually the cheapest place to buy your fuel?

Not necessarily, because the starting pump price matters as much as the discount. If Tesco is 8p a litre more expensive than a nearby station, the coupon only brings the two prices level for a fill within the discount cap. If the gap is bigger, you could still pay less elsewhere without using a voucher at all.

When does the Tesco fuel offer end?

The qualifying shopping period ends on Sunday the 18th of October, and you have until Sunday the 25th of October to use your fuel coupon. Those are two separate deadlines: the later date doesn't give you another week to earn a voucher. Put a reminder in your phone if you won't need fuel straight away, and allow time to visit while the kiosk is open.

Is the Tesco 8p fuel offer worth using?

If you’re already doing a qualifying £60 Tesco shop and its discounted fuel price is competitive locally, keeping the coupon could save you £4 on a 50-litre fill. That’s worth having for a shopping trip and fuel purchase you were making anyway. It becomes less useful if you need to buy extra groceries or drive well out of your way to use it.

There’s also a current Asda Rewards fuel offer, giving 5p off each litre after a qualifying £40 in-store shop. Tesco’s discount is 3p a litre larger, which is £1.50 more off a 50-litre fill, but it requires £20 more qualifying grocery spend. That comparison only helps once you’ve checked both pump prices and the cost of the shopping, so choose the combination that leaves you paying less overall.

Before your next shop, check whether your planned basket qualifies and whether you’ll need fuel before the coupon expires. If both fit, keep the voucher with your receipt and compare local prices before using it. You have until Sunday the 25th of October to redeem it, provided you earn it by Sunday the 18th of October.
