Tesco Fuel Discount: Spend £60 and Get 8p Off Every Litre

If you're already planning a £60 grocery shop at [Tesco], there is an extra saving available at the moment that could knock several pounds off your next tank of fuel. Spend at least £60 in one qualifying in-store transaction by the 31st of August and Tesco will print a coupon giving you 8p off each litre at a participating Tesco filling station.

There are a few catches worth knowing before deliberately changing where you shop. The £60 has to be spent in a single transaction after discounts have been taken off, the coupon is paper rather than digital, and you can't use it at Pay at Pump.

Most importantly, an 8p discount doesn't automatically make Tesco the cheapest place to buy fuel in your area.

How does the Tesco fuel discount work?

Spend £60 or more in one transaction inside a Tesco store between the 17th and the 31st of August and a paper fuel coupon should be issued at the checkout. The qualifying £60 is the amount left after discounts, promotions and other coupons have been applied, so a basket showing £62 before discounts could drop below the qualifying threshold when you actually pay.

The coupon gives you 8p off each litre of fuel in one qualifying transaction and is valid until the 6th of September. Tesco caps the total saving at £10, although most normal car fills will come nowhere near that limit. You would need to buy 125 litres in the same transaction to receive the full £10 discount.

One useful detail is that you don't need a Tesco Clubcard to receive the fuel coupon. Tesco's current terms specifically say a Clubcard isn't required, so this isn't one of those supermarket offers restricted to loyalty-scheme members.

How much could the Tesco 8p fuel coupon save you?

The saving depends entirely on how many litres you put into your vehicle. Because the discount is a fixed 8p per litre, it is easy to work out before deciding whether making a trip to a Tesco filling station is worthwhile.

For a 40-litre fill, you're saving £3.20. Put in 50 litres and it's £4, while a 60-litre fill saves £4.80.

That is useful money off if you were already going to spend £60 at Tesco and already needed fuel. It makes much less sense to add things you don't need to your trolley simply to reach the threshold, particularly if your fuel saving will only be £3 or £4.

Don't spend extra just to get the Tesco fuel coupon

This is probably the most important part of the deal. If your normal Tesco shop comes to £59, adding £1 of something you genuinely need to qualify makes sense. If your normal shop is £45 and you add £15 of unnecessary purchases so you can save £3.20 on 40 litres of fuel, you haven't saved money overall.

The same applies if Tesco isn't where you would ordinarily buy your groceries. A fuel voucher shouldn't outweigh a significantly higher grocery bill elsewhere, so compare the total cost rather than treating the 8p discount as free money.

I use the same approach with supermarket loyalty schemes and cashback offers generally. A discount works best when it sits on top of spending you were already planning, rather than persuading you to increase that spending to unlock it.

What counts towards the £60 Tesco spend?

Tesco says the qualifying amount must reach at least £60 in one in-store transaction after discounts, promotions and coupons have been applied. Online Tesco grocery orders and Whoosh purchases don't qualify, so you need to complete the transaction inside a participating store.

These exclusions could make a difference if your till total is only just above £60. Check how much of the transaction actually qualifies rather than assuming the total displayed before payment will automatically generate the coupon.

Where can you use the Tesco fuel coupon?

The voucher is for participating Tesco filling stations, and Tesco's store finder lets you search by postcode or town and filter the results to show locations with a Petrol Filling Station.

You need to take the paper coupon with you and hand it over when paying at the kiosk. Tesco says coupons can't be redeemed through Pay at Pump or at unmanned petrol stations, which is worth remembering if your usual Tesco forecourt doesn't have a staffed payment option.

The promotion is also excluded in Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. Tesco Express stores selling Esso fuel aren't included either, so don't assume that every forecourt carrying both Tesco and Esso branding will accept the voucher.

Can you use the Tesco fuel coupon at Pay at Pump?

No. This is one of the easier parts of the offer to miss because plenty of drivers automatically head for Pay at Pump when filling up.

Tesco requires you to present the physical paper coupon at the petrol station kiosk and redeem it when paying for the fuel. Pay at Pump and unmanned filling stations are specifically excluded from the promotion.

Keep the coupon somewhere safe after your grocery shop as well. It isn't stored automatically in your Clubcard app, and losing the paper voucher means you won't have anything to present when you fill up.

Is Tesco actually the cheapest place to buy your fuel?

Not necessarily, and this is where I would do one extra check before using the voucher. Fuel prices can vary enough between nearby filling stations that an 8p saving at Tesco could still leave you paying more than at another forecourt.

For example, if Tesco diesel was 8p a litre more expensive than another nearby filling station, your coupon would only bring it level. If the difference was greater than 8p, you could still be better off buying the cheaper fuel elsewhere and leaving the coupon unused.

When does the Tesco fuel offer end?

You need to complete your qualifying £60 in-store shop no later than the 31st of August. The fuel voucher lasts slightly longer, with Tesco giving customers until the 6th of September to use it.

That gap is useful because you don't need to buy fuel on the same day as the grocery shop. If your tank is already nearly full, you have a few extra days to use some fuel before redeeming the voucher.

I wouldn't leave it until the last minute if you have to travel to a particular Tesco filling station. Check the petrol station facilities first, make sure it has a staffed kiosk and remember to take the paper coupon with you.

Is the Tesco 8p fuel offer worth using?

Yes, if the £60 shop and the fuel purchase are things you were already going to make. A 50-litre fill would save £4, which is a useful reduction for doing little more than keeping hold of a coupon that comes out with your normal shopping receipt.

The value drops quickly if you need to spend more than planned to reach £60, drive out of your way to find a participating Tesco station or discover that another local forecourt is already substantially cheaper. Checking your normal grocery spend and the actual local pump prices gives you a much better answer than the 8p headline by itself.

If it fits your normal spending, use it. If you find yourself adding £10 of things you don't need to your shopping just to earn a £3 fuel saving, leave the offer behind.
