Plug-In Solar Panels Are Legal, But Will You Really Save £110?

Plug-in solar panels are now legal in Great Britain if they meet the new 800W product and safety requirements.


Plug-in solar panels can now legally be sold and used across Great Britain, opening up a smaller form of solar generation for households that may not want, or be able, to install a full rooftop system. The government says a qualifying kit can produce up to 800W and could cut electricity bills by as much as £110 a year, potentially supplying up to 20% of an average home’s electricity use.


That saving sounds appealing, but it doesn’t tell you whether buying one will actually be good value. The important calculation is how much the complete compliant system costs, what it is likely to generate in your particular home, and how many years it could take before the electricity savings repay the purchase price.


What Are Plug-In Solar Panels and How Do They Work?


Plug-in solar panels are small photovoltaic systems that generate electricity in much the same way as rooftop solar, but instead of being permanently wired into the property they connect through a standard UK mains socket. A microinverter converts the electricity generated by the panels into the alternating current used by your home.

It is also useful for seeing how mainstream retailers are beginning to describe the new systems to customers, although I would still check the government specification before buying.


That distinction matters when comparing prices. A £129 component kit and a complete compliant plug-in solar system are not the same thing, so check exactly what is included before assuming a product is ready to install and use.


When the panels are generating electricity, appliances in your home use that power first and draw any extra they need from the grid. The system is therefore intended to reduce the amount of electricity you buy during daylight hours rather than power the whole house on its own.


The government says an 800W system could, in good conditions, produce enough power to cover examples such as a fridge, television, Wi-Fi router, laptop, phone charger and games console running together. That does not mean you will receive 800W all day, because output changes with weather, season, orientation and shading.


How Much Could Plug-In Solar Panels Save?


The government’s figure is up to £110 a year, with plug-in solar potentially providing up to 20% of average household electricity use. Treat both figures as best-case estimates rather than what every household will receive.


Your saving will depend heavily on whether you are actually using electricity while the panels are generating it. Someone working from home during the day, for example, may be able to use more of the electricity directly than a household that is empty until the evening.

Location and positioning matter too. An unshaded panel with good exposure to daylight should generate more than one sitting behind a balcony wall or facing an unfavourable direction for much of the day.


That is why I wouldn’t buy one solely because the box says “save £110”. The figure that matters is what the system is likely to generate at your property and how much of that generation you can actually use.


How Much Do Plug-In Solar Panels Cost?


This is the part that matters most if you are buying one to save money. The market has only just opened, so prices are still settling and products being advertised under the “plug-in solar” banner do not all include the same components.


Argos plug-in solar already has a dedicated section online, which makes it one of the easiest places to see how early pricing is developing. When I checked on the 28th of August, the range included an EcoFlow 800W microinverter and cable kit at £129, although that is an inverter and cable package rather than a complete plug-in solar system with solar panels and mounting equipment.


Complete systems are also beginning to appear, but prices and specifications vary considerably. At this stage, I would avoid treating any one retailer's price as the normal market cost until more comparable products are available.


The best approach is to price the whole system you need, including panels, inverter, mounting hardware, cables and any electrical work. A cheap-looking listing stops being cheap if several essential parts have to be purchased separately.


Once more complete systems are listed, I would also compare Amazon, Currys, Wickes, B&Q and Screwfix. The government press notice names these retailers as being involved in the rollout, although individual ranges and launch dates will differ.


How Long Could It Take to Get Your Money Back?


The simplest way to judge whether plug-in solar makes financial sense is to divide the full purchase cost by your expected annual saving. If a complete system cost £500 and genuinely saved you £100 a year, the simple payback period would be around 5 years.


If the same system only saved £60 a year because your panels were shaded or you used relatively little daytime electricity, the payback would stretch to more than 8 years. Electricity prices may change during that period, as may the performance of the system, so this is only a rough comparison rather than a guaranteed return.


This is the biggest blind spot in the government announcement. A saving of up to £110 sounds good, but without knowing the purchase price and realistic output at your property, it tells you very little about whether the system is a good use of your money.


It is also worth comparing that payback period against other energy-saving home improvements. Depending on the property, spending the same amount on insulation, heating controls or another upgrade could potentially make more sense, so plug-in solar should be compared rather than considered in isolation.


Are All Plug-In Solar Kits Legal to Use?



The government has published an interim plug-in solar product specification covering the complete system, including electrical protection, plugs, inverter requirements, mounting and labelling.


The current specification also limits plug-in solar devices to a maximum apparent power of 800VA and says only one qualifying plug-in solar product should be used per household.


That makes marketplace purchases worth checking very carefully. A balcony solar kit designed for Germany or another European market should not be assumed to meet the British specification just because it can physically be connected using an adaptor or replacement plug.


Do You Need to Register Plug-In Solar?


Small-scale electricity generation normally needs to be notified to your local Distribution Network Operator, the company responsible for the electricity network serving your property.


Government guidance says solar generation devices should be registered with the relevant DNO, while the rules around plug-in solar are being adjusted to make that registration process simpler.


This is another point I would check in the instructions supplied with whichever product you buy rather than relying on retailer Q&A pages.


The Energy Networks Association and individual network operators are updating their processes to accommodate plug-in microgeneration under the revised connection rules.


Keep any registration confirmation and product paperwork after installation. If you later sell the property or need electrical work carried out, having a record of what has been connected is useful.


Do Plug-In Solar Panels Need an Electrician?


A compliant product is designed so it can be connected without the permanent professional installation associated with rooftop solar. That is one of the main reasons the government expects plug-in solar to be cheaper and more accessible.


That does not mean every electrical system is suitable. The government’s plug-in solar electrical safety study found that compliant systems could operate safely on domestic wiring under the tested conditions, although product performance was not identical across every device tested.


If your consumer unit is old, you are unsure about the condition of your wiring, or you need an outdoor socket installed, getting advice from a qualified electrician before plugging in the system is sensible. Any extra electrical work needs to be included in your cost calculation as well.


Can You Use Plug-In Solar Panels on a Balcony?


Some systems can be used on balconies, patios and other suitable outdoor spaces, which opens solar up to households without access to a conventional roof. The government specifically says they can be installed in outdoor spaces and on some balconies.


The word “some” matters. The mounting has to be secure, the position needs enough light to make the system worthwhile, and you must not create a hazard or block shared access and escape routes.


A balcony with heavy shading for much of the day may still legally accommodate the panels but generate far less electricity than the headline figures suggest. If saving money is the objective, check the likely solar exposure before buying rather than assuming every balcony will perform similarly.


If you live in a flat or leasehold property, check any building rules before buying equipment. Balcony fixings, external alterations and shared areas can be covered by lease or building-management conditions even where the solar product itself is legal to use.


Can Renters Use Plug-In Solar Panels?


Potentially, but the new rules do not override your tenancy agreement. The government says renters may need permission from their landlord, while leaseholders may need approval from the freeholder or building owner.


That is particularly relevant where panels need fixing to a balcony, wall, fence or another part of the property. Even if the solar equipment itself is removable, attaching it to the building can still fall under the terms of a tenancy or lease.


If you rent, I would get permission in writing before buying the system. Spending several hundred pounds and then discovering you are not allowed to install it would wipe out any potential energy saving very quickly.


Do You Need Planning Permission?


The government’s plug-in solar guidance says planning permission, landlord or freeholder approval and listed building consent can all potentially be required depending on the property and installation.


A typical small installation may not need formal planning consent, but listed buildings, conservation areas and flats can introduce extra restrictions. If you are unsure, check with your local council before ordering.


Planning permission and permission from a landlord or freeholder are also separate things. Having one does not automatically give you the other.


What Should You Check Before Buying?


Start by checking that the product is intended for legal plug-in use in Great Britain and complies with the government's current plug-in solar specification. Do not choose solely by wattage, price or the fact that it comes with a 3-pin plug.


Next, work out what is actually included. Make sure the advertised price covers the solar panels, microinverter, compliant lead, mounting hardware and any other parts required to use the system legally and safely.


Then look at your own home. Check where the panels would sit, how much sunlight the location receives, whether you need permission and how much electricity you use during daylight hours.


Finally, do the payback calculation. Compare the complete purchase cost against a realistic annual saving rather than the government’s maximum £110 figure.

Where Can You Buy Plug-In Solar Panels?


The government says Amazon, Argos, Currys and Wickes have committed to stocking plug-in solar, while B&Q and Screwfix are among retailers involved in the rollout.


Argos already has a dedicated plug-in solar range online. Other retailers are expected to add products as the market develops, so I would compare prices rather than buying from the first retailer to list one.


Can You Get Cashback on Plug-In Solar Panels?


If you're buying through a mainstream retailer, check cashback and discounted gift-card options before paying. On a purchase costing several hundred pounds, even a relatively small cashback rate can make a difference to the overall payback period.


I would check TopCashback, Quidco, Complete Savings, Rakuten and JamDoughnut before ordering.

Even 2% or 3% cashback on a £500 purchase is £10 to £15, which slightly shortens the payback period.


Are Plug-In Solar Panels Better Than Rooftop Solar?


They solve a different problem. Rooftop solar is much larger, normally professionally installed and can generate considerably more electricity, while plug-in solar is aimed at households looking for a smaller system with a lower entry cost.


The government says rooftop solar can save some homeowners up to £480 a year, compared with up to £110 for plug-in solar. That does not automatically make rooftop solar better value, because the purchase and installation costs are much higher.


If you own a suitable house and are considering a full system anyway, compare both options rather than assuming plug-in solar is the cheapest route over the long term.

Are Plug-In Solar Panels Worth Buying?


They could be, but I would not buy one purely on the £110 headline saving. The technology now gives renters, flat owners and people without a suitable roof another way to generate some of their own electricity, which is useful, but whether it saves you money comes down to purchase price and how well it performs at your home.


At this early stage, I would compare complete compliant systems and let the retail market settle rather than assuming the first products available offer the best value. Check your likely generation, work out a realistic annual saving and divide the full purchase cost by that figure.


If the payback period looks sensible and you have a suitable sunny location, plug-in solar could be an interesting addition to your energy-saving toolkit. If the maths only works when you assume the maximum £110 saving every year, I would be more cautious.


If solar is not suitable for your property, there are still other ways to reduce your energy bills, including options that require little or no upfront spending.
