1. Earn Tesco Clubcard points with more than 500 brands through Tesco's online shopping links.

If you're already buying trainers, Christmas presents or tickets for a day out, earning something back on those purchases is a welcome bonus. You might normally turn to a cashback website, where you visit a retailer through its link and receive money back on an eligible order.

Tesco has now added another option, letting you collect Clubcard points when you shop online with more than 500 brands.

The Clubcard Points Partners expansion means a purchase outside Tesco could help pay for a future food shop or meal out. You still buy from the retailer, but you start through Tesco's link so the purchase can be connected to your Clubcard account. Whether that's better than cashback depends on how many points you'll earn and, just as importantly, what you'll use them for.

Where can you earn Clubcard points online?

The expanded service covers shopping beyond your weekly groceries, with participating brands including Nike, LEGO, Lookfantastic, Trainline and Selfridges. That gives you a reason to look at the Clubcard app before buying a birthday present or booking a train journey, even if you weren't planning to shop at Tesco. Each retailer has its own offer, so the number of points can vary between shops and between different purchases at the same shop.

You'll see two similar names as you look around Tesco's Clubcard pages. Points Partners are the businesses where you earn points, while Reward Partners are where you exchange your Clubcard vouchers for something else, such as money towards a restaurant meal. You could earn points buying trainers from one business, then turn the resulting vouchers into a reward to use at another.

How do you collect points on a purchase?

Before you start filling your basket, sign in to the Clubcard section of the Tesco app or Tesco's collect-points page. Find the retailer you want, open its offer and follow the shopping link to its website. You then add your items and pay there as usual, rather than placing the order with Tesco.

Tesco's shopping instructions recommend beginning with an empty basket and completing the order in the same browsing session. The visit needs to be recorded, often called “tracking”, so the retailer knows to connect your purchase to Tesco. Switching to the retailer's app, rejecting the cookies needed for tracking or using an ad blocker can stop that connection working; Tesco's tracking guidance explains the settings and actions that affect it.

Before following the shopping link, look at the offer that applies to you. A higher rate might be reserved for new customers, for example, while an existing customer earns less, or certain products might be excluded. Finding that out first is better than buying something on the assumption you'll receive a reward you don't qualify for.

How much are Tesco Clubcard points worth?

Every 100 points is worth £1 in Tesco vouchers, so 400 points gives you £4 towards your Tesco shopping once converted. You can also exchange vouchers for double their value with participating Reward Partners, while selected restaurants offer triple value. For example, PizzaExpress gives you three times the voucher value towards eligible food, turning £4 in Clubcard vouchers into £12 towards a meal.

That's why two people can get quite different use from the same number of points. Someone saving vouchers for their groceries has £4 to spend, while someone who already planned a qualifying meal at PizzaExpress could put £12 towards the food. The larger amount is restaurant credit, though, so it won't help pay for petrol or another bill in the way cash would.

Why you might earn fewer points than you expect

The points rate applies to eligible spending, which can be less than the amount you pay at checkout. Tesco excludes VAT, delivery charges, packaging and booking fees, along with anything else excluded by the retailer's offer. VAT is a tax included in many prices, so taking it out of the calculation can make a noticeable difference to your points.

For an example, imagine you're buying an eligible item costing £120, including VAT at 20%, with an offer of four points per £1. Removing the VAT leaves £100 on which to earn points, giving you 400 points worth £4 in Tesco vouchers, rather than the 480 points you might have expected. These are illustrative figures, not a current retailer offer, and different purchases can have different VAT treatment.

Are the points better than cashback?

I'd compare Tesco with TopCashback, Quidco and Rakuten before deciding which link to use. Those services can pay cashback on qualifying online orders, giving you money you can use elsewhere once it's approved and available to withdraw. Tesco could offer more value towards a meal or day out, but a bigger voucher amount isn't automatically the better choice for your household.

Imagine you've found the item you want and the same purchase would earn either 400 Clubcard points or £5 cashback. If you'd spend the points at Tesco, you'd get £4 towards groceries, making the £5 cashback the better return. If you'd exchange them for a qualifying restaurant reward at triple value, you'd have £12 towards food instead, which could be more useful if you were going there anyway.

Before counting the restaurant credit as a £12 saving, look at how you'd otherwise pay for that meal. If there's a discount you can't use alongside the reward, or the voucher doesn't cover everything you're ordering, the amount you save on the final bill could be different. You also don't want to book an extra meal out purely to use a reward and end up spending more overall.

Compare the offers before you begin the order, then use the link from the service you've chosen. Visiting Tesco first and a cashback site afterwards doesn't mean you'll collect both rewards, as the later visit can replace the earlier tracking. Unless the terms specifically allow a combination, treat the points and cashback as alternatives.

What about discount codes and gift-card cashback?

A code that takes money off the bill immediately can be better than waiting for a reward. In an illustrative comparison, £10 off an order beats £4 in Tesco vouchers, but the result could change if those vouchers would cover £12 of restaurant spending you'd already planned. Some voucher codes can stop partner points being awarded, so compare the amount you'd actually pay and the reward you'd actually use, rather than assuming you can have both.

Gift-card cashback is another option if the retailer is available through an app such as JamDoughnut. You buy the retailer's gift card in the app, receive cashback on that purchase and use the card to pay for your shopping. For example, a £50 gift card offering 4% cashback would add £2 to your cashback balance while leaving the full £50 on the card to spend; that's an illustration, not a quoted offer.

Before buying the card, make sure it can be used for your order, as some are restricted to online shopping or particular stores. Payment with a gift card can exclude an order from Clubcard points, even when the card covers only part of the bill. Compare that cashback with the points before committing money to the gift card.

When will you receive the points?

Your purchase should normally appear as pending within 48 hours, which means it has been recorded but hasn't yet been approved. Points are usually awarded within 45 to 90 days; travel bookings, contracts and subscriptions can take longer, typically up to 120 days after the stay finishes or the contract or subscription starts. A retailer's own terms can allow a longer wait, so an October purchase won't necessarily provide vouchers in time for Christmas.

You can view pending points in your Clubcard account, and Tesco sends updates by email. A refund or cancellation can remove the reward, so don't treat a pending total as vouchers ready to spend. Once the points are approved, they move into your available Clubcard balance.

If an order hasn't appeared, contact Tesco through its help and contact options, with the order confirmation to hand. Tesco gives a three-month deadline from purchase for missing-points claims, so don't wait for a lengthy travel approval period to finish before asking about a booking that was never recorded. An order showing as pending and an order missing altogether need different follow-up.

Would I use Tesco Clubcard Points Partners?

I'd add it to the services I compare before buying online, especially when there's a restaurant reward I'd already planned to use. Earning points towards that meal could be a better deal than a smaller cash payment, while cashback may suit me better when I want money towards everyday expenses. There's no reason to stick to the same service for every purchase when the offers can change.

I'd still find the best price for the item first, including delivery, then compare the rewards available at that retailer. If the same trainers cost £10 less elsewhere, earning £4 in Tesco vouchers won't make the more expensive pair a bargain. Once you've found a competitive price, spending a minute comparing points and cashback could leave you with a little more from shopping you were doing anyway.

Frequently asked questions

Can you earn Tesco Clubcard points at other retailers?

Yes. More than 500 Points Partner brands are available, with the new online shopping route requiring you to visit the retailer through Tesco and meet the offer conditions.

Are Points Partners the same as Reward Partners?

No. Points Partners let you earn Clubcard points. Reward Partners let you exchange existing Clubcard vouchers for rewards.

Are points calculated on the full amount you pay?

Not necessarily. Tesco excludes VAT and charges such as delivery and booking fees from eligible spending, alongside each partner's exclusions.

Can you earn Clubcard points and cashback on the same order?

Don't assume so. Compare the offers and choose one tracked shopping route unless the relevant terms explicitly permit both rewards.

Will the points arrive immediately?

They should normally appear as pending within 48 hours, but an award usually takes 45–90 days. Travel and some other purchases have longer approval periods.
