1. Sainsbury’s Healthy Start top-up offers eligible shoppers up to £18 towards fruit, vegetables, beans and pulses.

Fruit for snacks, vegetables for dinner and a few tins of beans or lentils are regular additions to plenty of family shopping baskets. If you already use a Healthy Start card at Sainsbury’s, you may be able to get some extra help paying for them before Christmas. The supermarket’s Healthy Start top-up offers eligible customers £3 a week for six weeks, worth up to £18 altogether.

You’ll need to register by 11.59 pm on the 9th of November 2026, and having a Healthy Start card alone doesn’t qualify you. Sainsbury’s also needs a record of you using that card and your Nectar card together during an earlier shopping trip. It’s worth checking that requirement before applying, particularly if you normally use Healthy Start somewhere else.

Who can get the Sainsbury’s Healthy Start top-up?

The offer is for eligible NHS Healthy Start customers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland who have a Nectar card. Your qualifying purchase must have been made between the 20th of October 2025 and the 20th of October 2026, inclusive, using both cards in the same transaction. Shopping there now won’t meet that historic requirement.

For example, you might have paid for eligible groceries with your Healthy Start Mastercard and scanned your Nectar card during the same visit. If you used the cards on separate shopping trips, that isn’t the same thing. Sainsbury’s eligibility rules and full offer terms explain how the trial works.

This also means you shouldn’t make a special trip and spend money now in the hope of qualifying. The registration deadline is still ahead, but the qualifying shopping period has already finished.

How do you apply for the extra £18?

Use the Sainsbury’s Healthy Start registration form before the November deadline. Registration asks for your name, email address and the last 11 digits of your Nectar number. Check those details carefully, as the email address is where your vouchers will arrive.

If you qualify, you’ll receive the first £3 eGift card from the 18th of November, with further vouchers during the six-week promotion. An eGift card is a digital voucher sent by email, so keep an eye on your inbox and junk folder. The extra money doesn’t appear as a top-up on your existing NHS Healthy Start Mastercard.

Why you need to use each voucher within seven days

Each £3 voucher has a seven-day spending window, so this is something to use alongside your regular shopping rather than save until Christmas Eve. Using each voucher within seven days is also a condition of receiving the following week’s voucher. Each redemption requires a minimum £3 spend.

A reminder on your phone could help if you tend to read emails and then forget about them before your next shop. Plan the voucher into the shopping you already need, whether that’s fresh vegetables for dinner or eligible cupboard staples you’ll use later.

What food can you buy with the vouchers?

The vouchers cover eligible fruit, vegetables, beans and pulses, including fresh, frozen, tinned and dried products. That gives you options beyond fresh produce, which could be helpful if you want ingredients that will keep until you need them. Pulses include foods such as lentils and chickpeas, which can go into soups, stews and other meals.

Excluded foods include potatoes, yams, plantain, cassava, baked beans, coconut, juice, smoothies, dressed salads and products with added sugar or several non-vegetable ingredients. Don't assume that everything on the fruit and vegetable aisle qualifies, or that a prepared meal is included because it contains vegetables. Choose eligible foods your household will actually eat, so the voucher helps with your usual food costs.

Can you spend the £3 online?

You can use the promotional eGift cards in participating Sainsbury’s stores or online. Your online delivery must arrive during the voucher’s validity period. Delivery charges may apply, so adding the voucher to an order you were already placing is likely to make more sense than paying for a separate delivery to use £3.

The NHS Healthy Start Mastercard can’t be used for online purchases, even though these separate Sainsbury’s vouchers can. If you normally pay for your eligible groceries with Healthy Start, you’ll still need to use that card in store. Keep the two payment methods separate when planning how you’ll shop.

What if you don’t already receive Healthy Start?

Healthy Start helps eligible pregnant people and families with children under four pay for specified food and milk. Money is loaded onto a prepaid card every four weeks, with eligibility depending on your circumstances. Our Healthy Start guide explains the wider scheme, what the card covers and how to apply.

You can check the official NHS eligibility information if you’re unsure whether you qualify. Scotland uses Best Start Foods instead. Applying for Healthy Start now may help with future food shopping if you’re eligible, but it won’t create the past Sainsbury’s transaction needed for this particular promotion.

If you already meet the offer’s conditions, register before the deadline and plan to use the emailed vouchers during your regular shops. Across six weeks, the extra support could cover £18 of eligible food that you’d otherwise pay for yourself. The weekly expiry dates mean it’s worth treating each email as part of that week’s shopping list.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Sainsbury’s Healthy Start top-up worth?

Eligible customers can receive a £3 eGift card each week for six weeks, worth up to £18 altogether. The vouchers arrive by email, separately from the money on the NHS Healthy Start card.

When do I need to register?

Registration closes at 11.59 pm on the 9th of November 2026. The first £3 eGift cards are due from the 18th of November.

Can I save the vouchers for one Christmas shop?

Each voucher must be used within seven days of receiving it, so you can’t save all six for one shop. Letting one expire also affects eligibility for the following week’s voucher.

Can I use the Sainsbury’s voucher online?

Yes, the promotional eGift card can be used online as well as in participating stores. This is different from the NHS Healthy Start Mastercard, which can’t be used for online purchases.

Is the offer available in Scotland?

This offer is for eligible NHS Healthy Start customers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scotland has a separate scheme called Best Start Foods.
